How a fully automated drilling platform eliminates safety risk

Winning the golden vector 2016, Robotic Drilling Systems has removed the safety risk often associated with people working on an oil drilling platform.

The drill-floor system uses robotic technology to carry out fully unmanned drill floor operations.

In this igus video, we see that the automated drilling platform acts completely independently – selecting suitable drilling elements, moving them to the correct position and using them. To watch the video, click HERE.

Here, several RBR (reverse bend radius) energy chains systems are used in the robot’s joints; these are responsible for the supply of power and data, as well as media in the rotary joints. The technical development, which was extremely complex due to the limited design space available, was taken over by the igus project engineering team.

Don’t forget, applications for this year’s vector awards can be submitted online HEREby filling in a simple form with a design brief and description of the energy chain application.

Supporting photos and videos can also be uploaded. The closing date for entries is 23rd February 2018.
