{"id":10763,"date":"2019-02-18T10:51:33","date_gmt":"2019-02-18T10:51:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=10763"},"modified":"2019-02-18T11:01:20","modified_gmt":"2019-02-18T11:01:20","slug":"employers-dont-know-what-engineers-want-from-a-job-offer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/employers-dont-know-what-engineers-want-from-a-job-offer\/","title":{"rendered":"Employers don\u2019t know what engineers want from a job offer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Despite 89% of the industry\u2019s employers claiming to know what professionals find most attractive in a job offer, new data reveals that two-fifths (40.4%) actually get it wrong.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s according to the latest survey from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"CV-Library (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cv-library.co.uk\/?utm_source=press%20release&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=press-release&amp;utm_content=boiler-plate\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>CV-Library<\/strong><\/a>, the UK independent job site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey asked job hunters across the engineering industry what they believe to be the most important aspects of a job offer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also asked employers they believe professionals deem to be the most important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When comparing the responses, the data reveals some discrepancies. While 84.1% of engineering professionals voted salary as the most important factor, only 59.6% of employers thought this would be the case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other key findings include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Employers believe location to be the least important part of a job offer (5.6%), while engineering professionals vote this as their second most important factor (63.8%)<\/li><li>What\u2019s more, over a third (37.7%) of professionals in the industry placed working hours as the third most important part of a job offer<\/li><li>Flexible working is crucial to one in five engineers (18%), yet only 13.6% of employers believed this to be a priority<\/li><li>Finally, 21.1% of employers said benefits and workplace perks are an attractive factor, compared with 28% of professionals<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library, comments:\u201cWith so much uncertainty across the job market right now, it\u2019s crucial that businesses in the industry are doing all they can to attract talented new recruits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Misjudging what candidates are looking for in a job offer can have harmful repercussions for an employer. As such, employers need to have a clear understanding of what engineering professionals want from a job, so they can ensure they\u2019re investing in the right areas and offering competitive packages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more, engineering professionals were asked to reveal what they look for when scanning a job description, with 92.2% saying they look for set criteria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, 35.4% even said they wouldn\u2019t apply to a job if the description didn\u2019t contain the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Salary \u2013 87<\/li><li>Location \u2013 83.1%<\/li><li>Job title \u2013 43.1%<\/li><li>Working hours \u2013 30.8%<\/li><li>Flexible working \u2013 15.5%<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Biggins concludes: \u201cProfessionals in the engineering sector know what they want from a job offer and those that are aware of the current climate also know that they can afford to be picky with their choices. With many nervous to switch roles amidst ongoing uncertainty, it\u2019s going to take a competitive package to encourage them to leave their current position.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor this reason, your job descriptions need to clearly show the salary, location, job title and working hours, otherwise you risk losing out on applications.
