{"id":1108,"date":"2017-09-22T13:16:43","date_gmt":"2017-09-22T12:16:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=1108"},"modified":"2017-09-23T18:23:06","modified_gmt":"2017-09-23T17:23:06","slug":"engineering-job-great-expectations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/engineering-job-great-expectations\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering jobs: great expectations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three quarters (75.9%) of engineering professionals admit to having high expectations when it comes to looking for and applying for jobs \u2013 higher than any other industry in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>That is according to New data from the UK\u2019s leading independent job board, <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cv-library.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CV-Library<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>A survey, which explored the views of 1,200 UK workers, found that engineers were also some of the most likely to negotiate on a job offer, with 73.4% admitting to doing so.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- Engineer News Network --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"6176629146\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nWhat\u2019s more, 57.1% said they\u2019d feel comfortably haggling with a potential employer. When asked what the key areas were that they would negotiate on within a job\u00a0offer, respondents cited the following:<\/p>\n<p>1. Salary (86.1%)<\/p>\n<p>2. Working hours (44.3%)<\/p>\n<p>3. Benefits (43%)<\/p>\n<p>4. Holiday allowance (39.2%)<\/p>\n<p>5. Flexible working (32.9%)<\/p>\n<p>Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library comments: \u201cIt\u2019s fair to say that Britain is a nation of hagglers in every respect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNowadays, negotiations aren\u2019t just made at the local market, but in shops, hotels and even during the job hunting process!<\/p>\n<span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\">\u201cThe shift in power within the job market means that many candidates know their worth and will only move for a job that meets all of their criteria.&#8221;<\/span>\n<p>Higgins continues: &#8220;What\u2019s more, with work\/life balance becoming more important in today\u2019s working world, today\u2019s candidates want confirmation that they\u2019re not going to be glued to their desks for all hours of the day. There is always room for negotiation with job offers; you just have to be confident about your position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite engineers admitting to having high expectations around jobs, 64.6% <strong>DON\u2019T<\/strong> think they expect too much from their job offers, while a further 50% stated that their high expectations have <strong>NOT<\/strong> put them off applying for or accepting certain roles. In fact, 91.1% said they would be willing to compromise when negotiating a job offer.<\/p>\n<p>Biggins continues: \u201cOften, your perception around what your \u2018dream job\u2019 is may turn<br \/>\nout to be the opposite, so it\u2019s always advisable to keep an open mind during the job hunting process. But that doesn\u2019t mean settling for a job which is way below your pay grade or doesn\u2019t allow you to work flexibly should you need to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking a gamble and pushing for more is a strategy that can pay off and it\u2019s likely that your potential employer will have also left some wiggle room.
