{"id":11389,"date":"2019-04-02T08:00:18","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T07:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=11389"},"modified":"2019-04-01T10:18:12","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T09:18:12","slug":"space-applications-scaled-with-cots-to-radiation-tolerant-and-radiation-hardened-arm-core-mcus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/space-applications-scaled-with-cots-to-radiation-tolerant-and-radiation-hardened-arm-core-mcus\/","title":{"rendered":"Space applications scaled with COTS-to-radiation-tolerant and radiation-hardened Arm Core MCUs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Microchip announces the space industry\u2019s first Arm-based microcontrollers (MCUs) that combine the low-cost and large ecosystem benefits of Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) technology with space-qualified versions that have scalable levels of radiation performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the automotive-qualified SAMV71, the <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"SAMV71Q21RT radiation-tolerant (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microchip.com\/SAMV71Q21RT\" target=\"_blank\">SAMV71Q21RT radiation-tolerant<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"SAMRH71 radiation-hardened MCUs (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microchip.com\/SAMRH71\" target=\"_blank\">SAMRH71 radiation-hardened MCUs<\/a><\/strong>implement the widely deployed Arm Cortex<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>-M7 System on Chip (SoC), enabling more integration, cost reduction and higher performance in space systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SAMV71Q21RT and SAMRH71 allow software developers to begin implementation with the SAMV71 COTS device before moving to a space-grade component, significantly reducing development time and cost.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both devices can use the SAMV71\u2019s full software development toolchain, as they share the same ecosystem including software libraries, Board Support Package (BSP) and Operating System (OS) first level of porting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once preliminary developments are complete on the COTS device, all software development can be easily swapped out to a radiation-tolerant or radiation-hardened version in a high-reliability plastic package or space-grade ceramic package. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SAMV71Q21RT radiation-tolerant MCU reuses the full COTS mask set and offers pinout compatibility, making the transition from COTS to qualified space parts immediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the SAMV71Q21RT\u2019s radiation performance is ideal for NewSpace applications such as Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations and robotics, the SAMRH71 offers the radiation performance suited for more critical sub-systems like gyroscopes and star tracker equipment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SAMV71Q21RT radiation-tolerant device ensures an accumulated TID of 30Krad (Si) with latchup immunity and is non-destructive against heavy ions. Both devices are fully immune to Single Event Latchup (SEL) up to 62 MeV.cm\u00b2\/mg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SAMRH71 radiation-hardened MCU is designed specifically for deep space applications with the following targeted radiation performances:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accumulated TID of more than 100 Krad (Si)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No Single Event Upset (SEU) Linear Energy Transfer (LET) up to 20 MeV.cm\u00b2\/mg, without system mitigation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed for no Single Event Functional Interrupts (SEFI), which secures all memories\u2019 integrity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the Arm Cortex-M7 core, the SAMV71Q21RT and SAMRH71 feature high-performance and low-power operation to provide long operating life for aerospace applications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To protect against the effects of radiation and manage system mitigation, the architecture of the devices includes fault management and data integrity features such as Error Correcting Code (ECC) memory, Integrity Check Monitor (ICM) and Memory Protection Unit (MPU).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SAMV71Q21RT and SAMRH71 also feature CAN FD and Ethernet AVB\/TSN capabilities to follow the evolution of space systems\u2019 connectivity requirements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To further support deep space applications, the SAMRH71 has dedicated SpaceWire and MIL-STD-1553 interfaces for control and high-speed data management up to 200Mbit\/s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ease the design process and accelerate time to market, developers can use the ATSAMV71-XULT evaluation board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The devices are supported by Atmel Studio Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for developing, debugging and software libraries.&nbsp; Both devices will also be supported in MPLAB Harmony version 3.0 by mid-2019. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SAMRH71 in CQFP256 ceramic package is sampling today, and the SAMV71Q21RT is available today in volume production quantities in four derivatives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SAMV71Q21RT-DHB-E in ceramic prototype QFP144 package &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SAMV71Q21RT-DHB-MQ in ceramic space-grade QFP144 package, QMLQ equivalent &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SAMV71Q21RT-DHB-SV in ceramic space-grade QFP144 package, QMLV equivalentSAMV71Q21RT-DHB-MQ in plastic QFP144 package, AQEC high-reliability qualified. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microchip announces the space industry\u2019s first Arm-based microcontrollers (MCUs) that combine the low-cost and large ecosystem benefits of Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) technology with space-qualified versions that have scalable levels of radiation performance.
