{"id":11554,"date":"2019-04-10T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2019-04-10T08:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=11554"},"modified":"2019-04-09T09:59:35","modified_gmt":"2019-04-09T08:59:35","slug":"gea-doubles-the-drive-power-of-its-gea-hilge-hygia-hygienic-pump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/gea-doubles-the-drive-power-of-its-gea-hilge-hygia-hygienic-pump\/","title":{"rendered":"GEA doubles the drive power of its GEA Hilge HYGIA hygienic pump"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>GEA supplements its <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/gea.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"GEA Hilge HYGIA range (opens in a new tab)\">GEA Hilge HYGIA range<\/a><\/strong> with a 45 kilowatt motor, thereby expanding the hygienic pump\u2019s performance spectrum to a flow rate of 180 cubic meters per hour.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new version is also suitable for demanding pharmaceutical applications, particularly because the use of high-quality, no- cast materials in CIP- and SIP-capable special pumps is a critical factor in the production of life science products.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A 60% increase in conveying capacity\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GEA Hilge HYGIA 45 kW is an end-suction centrifugal pump from the HYGIA line, which has a decades-long proven track record in sterile applications thanks to its electropolished surfaces, high-quality sealing materials and flexible designs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur successful pump packs more horsepower under the shroud,\u201d says Martin Zickler, product manager for hygienic pumps at GEA. \u201cThe 45 kilowatt motor allows us to deliver 60% more flow rate than before.\u201d Instead of 110 cubic meters per hour, the pump now delivers 180 \u2013 a quantum leap that enormously increases the performance range of the hygienic pump. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Simplified spare parts handling&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GEA covers the performance range with just two sizes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur customers are used to achieving this performance range with several different sizes. In practical terms, this means that they require numerous mechanical seals and different O-ring sets for operation. Managing such a spare parts inventory requires considerable logistical effort from customers. We can now reduce that considerably,\u201d says Zickler. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with the pharmaceutical industry\u2019s demands for hygiene, investment and operating costs for process technology are also on the rise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Zickler, maintenance and spare parts replacement are also significant cost factors in this sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hygienic pumps for the highest water quality&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GEA Hilge HYGIA has a long-standing reputation as a hygienic pump for food and beverage processing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, GEA sees great potential in pharmaceutical manufacturing, particularly due to critical fluid characteristics such as lack of lubricating properties and the stringent regulations that make pump designs more challenging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe main applications are, for example, WFI distribution systems (WFI = water for injection),\u201d explains Zickler. In addition to its high-performance pumps, GEA also delivers smooth and cavity-free hygienic design and reliable technical documentation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Non-cast parts that are easy to clean&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to facilitate cleanability in hygienically sensitive applications, GEA uses forged, deep-drawn and milled components instead of castings for media-contacting parts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause of the risk of blowholes, cast parts are particularly undesirable in the pharmaceutical industry. Cleanability would be reduced, thus making it difficult to obtain the 3-A certification,\u201d says Zickler.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, both aspects were important parameters for GEA in the development of the pump.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All materials have therefore been carefully selected for their use in hygienic processes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The casings are made of forged CrNiMo (1.4404) and have blowhole-free, smooth surfaces.
