{"id":12140,"date":"2019-05-12T11:30:31","date_gmt":"2019-05-12T10:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=12140"},"modified":"2019-05-10T11:15:44","modified_gmt":"2019-05-10T10:15:44","slug":"rapid-tct-renishaw-showcases-am-capabilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/rapid-tct-renishaw-showcases-am-capabilities\/","title":{"rendered":"RAPID + TCT: Renishaw showcases AM capabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>To share its expertise in medical device manufacturing, global engineering technologies company <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.renishaw.com\/additive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Renishaw (opens in a new tab)\">Renishaw<\/a><\/strong> is returning to RAPID + TCT, the additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D printing event in the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the 21st to the 23rd of May 2019, Renishaw can be found on Booth 827 at the Cobo Center in Detroit, Michigan.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday 21st May, at 3.30pm (EDT), Marc Saunders, Director of AM Applications at Renishaw and Alexis Dang MD, Chief Medical Officer at PrinterPrezz Inc. will give a talk explaining the clinical and manufacturing considerations when additively manufacturing spinal implants, as part of the AM Technical Insights Forum.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Marc-Saunders-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Marc-Saunders-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Marc-Saunders-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Marc-Saunders-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Marc-Saunders-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Marc-Saunders.jpg 1368w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Marc Saunders, Director of AM Applications at Renishaw<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The talk will explore the growing capabilities of additive manufacturing technologies and how they can be used in the medical sector to improve productivity when manufacturing customisable implants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The talk will complement the exhibition of Renishaw\u2019s latest AM system, the RenAM 500Q, which includes four 500W lasers in the most commonly used platform size.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By speeding up the AM build process, manufacturers will see a drastic increase in productivity, leading to a reduction in cost-per-part, an increase in return on investment and a reduction in process waste. This will allow AM to be used in applications that were previously uneconomical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the show, Renishaw will also demonstrate its QuantAM build preparation software, developed specifically for use with Renishaw additive manufacturing systems. The dedicated software tool has an intuitive workflow and easy navigation to allow users to rapidly prepare models for the AM process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAdditive manufacturing enables the design and manufacture of more complex medical devices,\u201d explained Saunders. \u201cBy reducing design constraints, clinicians and medical device manufacturers can dedicate their time to catering for more complex conditions, match devices to an individual\u2019s anatomy and, in many cases, promote osseointegration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cOur presentation will explore the clinical benefits of spinal implants that have been designed with the patient in mind,\u201d added Dr. Alexis Dang. \u201cWhen clinicians and engineers collaborate to utilise advanced AM technologies, designs are optimised for improved patient fit and enhanced osseointegration, for additive manufacturing and optimal post-processing. Our aim is to bring more advanced medical devices to market more quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUsing software specifically designed for Renishaw AM platforms allows users to unlock all the benefits of additive manufacturing,\u201d continued Saunders. \u201cManufacturers can use QuantAM software for tighter integration into the machine control software and to accurately and rapidly review all build files for Renishaw AM systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saunders has over 25 years\u2019 experience in high tech manufacturing. At Renishaw, Saunders manages a global network of Solutions Centres for metal additive manufacturing, enabling customers who are considering deploying AM as a production process to gain hands-on experience with the technology before committing to a new facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Alexis Dang is a board-certified orthopaedic sports surgeon. He is an HS Clinical Associate Professor at UCSF.
