{"id":12150,"date":"2019-05-13T09:54:06","date_gmt":"2019-05-13T08:54:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=12150"},"modified":"2019-05-13T10:52:50","modified_gmt":"2019-05-13T09:52:50","slug":"majority-of-engineers-prioritise-work-and-money-over-a-social-love-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/majority-of-engineers-prioritise-work-and-money-over-a-social-love-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Majority of engineers prioritise work and money over a social\/love life"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New research from CV-Library, the UK independent job board, reveals that the majority of engineers (55.6%) feel work is the most important thing in their life right now, with only 17.8% prioritising their social life and 10% their love life.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study surveyed 1,200 working professionals and found that only family (80.2%) trumped a job as the top priority, also beating health (50.5%).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cv-library.co.uk\/jobs\/engineering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"What\u2019s more, despite sacrificing a social and love life for their career, only 15.6% of engineers claim to be in their dream&nbsp;job (opens in a new tab)\">What\u2019s more, despite sacrificing a social and love life for their career, only 15.6% of engineers claim to be in their dream&nbsp;job<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ https:\/\/www.cv-library.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"CV-Library (opens in a new tab)\">CV-Library<\/a><\/strong>, comments on the findings: \u201cTechnological advances in recent years have made it easy for us to become absorbed in the \u2018always-on\u2019 work culture sweeping the UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, it\u2019s concerning to think that so many of those in the engineering trade are missing out on time with their loved ones to put in more hours at work. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhilst it\u2019s commendable that so many engineers are invested in their careers, it\u2019s not necessary to sacrifice your entire personal life in pursuit of success. Of course, a desire to move forward at work may require a change in lifestyle, but don\u2019t lose everything else which brings you joy along the way.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study sought to further understand what engineers\u2019 priorities in life are right now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The majority (73.7%) stated that they hadn\u2019t achieved everything that they wanted to so far in life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked what they wanted to achieve next, the following were most desirable:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">* 50.8% would like to be in their dream job&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">* 49.2% would like to earn over \u00a350k &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">* 27.7% would like to travel for an extended period of time &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">* 26.2% would like to buy a house &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">* 20.4% would like to retire&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biggins concludes: \u201cIt\u2019s interesting to see that engineers would rather be in their dream job than in a role that comes with a high income. It just goes to show how important job satisfaction really is, especially in terms of pursuing your interests outside of work, such as the ability to travel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf it\u2019s something you\u2019ve been dreaming of doing for ages, be sure to have that conversation with your employer.
