{"id":1252,"date":"2017-09-23T19:00:41","date_gmt":"2017-09-23T18:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=1252"},"modified":"2017-09-23T19:00:41","modified_gmt":"2017-09-23T18:00:41","slug":"safety-critical-jet-engine-fire-seals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/safety-critical-jet-engine-fire-seals\/","title":{"rendered":"Safety critical jet engine fire seals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A specialist aerospace engineering company has formulated a composition of materials for safety critical jet engine fire seals, which passes every industry standard fire test<\/p>\n<span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iconaerotech.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Icon Aerospace Technology<\/a><\/span>, based in Retford, UK, has spent eight years investigating multiple modern materials and design processes to develop jet engine fire seals, which can withstand extreme temperatures of more than 1,093 \u00baC (2,000 degrees Fahrenheit), and as low as -60 \u00baC.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/fire-test-Icon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1253 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/fire-test-Icon-300x152.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/fire-test-Icon-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/fire-test-Icon.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The seals have already consistently passed a series of industry standard tests, including ISO\/TR 2685 and AC20-125 where the seal is exposed to a flame at 1,100 \u00baC, for 15 minutes, whilst being subjected to vibration, airflow and pressure deltas.<\/p>\n<p>The company has invested time in its network of fire testing facilities and its customers to listen and respond to their challenges, working together to overcome them.<\/p>\n<p>The result is a product which has passed 11 fire tests first time for major aerospace OEM Rolls Royce.<\/p>\n<p>Across the industry it is typically up to three tests per seal that are required to achieve compliance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/fire-side-test-Icon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1254 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/fire-side-test-Icon-300x151.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/fire-side-test-Icon-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/fire-side-test-Icon.jpg 654w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Dan Bailey, Commercial Director at Icon Aerospace Technology commented: \u201cWe have spent a lot of time with our network to really understand in detail, the application of fire seals, to ensure we are capable of designing a product which is highly effective when in use. By understanding everything from the external forces affecting the seals, to the air flow interacting with them, we have been able to design a product which has a very high success rate for passing fire tests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fire seals are designed and manufactured in the UK by Icon, and even the rigs used to perform the tests are designed on these shores to ensure they truly replicate in-situ conditions.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nThe testing phase for the seals saw Icon conduct 26 individual fire tests, with every seal successfully concluding a comprehensive test programme.<\/p>\n<p>These products play a vital role on aircraft, containing fire within localised areas to prevent flame spread.<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly important when applied to engines and auxiliary power units, where the seal acts as a barrier between the flame and the rest of the aircraft. Icon\u2019s fire seal components are also used in the main fans of aircraft, as well as inside fuel systems.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Rubery, Head of Sales at Icon Aerospace Technology concluded: \u201cAs developing engine technologies present greater challenges for seal manufacturers, Icon is committed to working closely with our customers to help them overcome their challenges through collaboration.
