{"id":12763,"date":"2019-06-15T11:30:17","date_gmt":"2019-06-15T10:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=12763"},"modified":"2019-06-12T10:36:29","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T09:36:29","slug":"nexeon-and-partners-funded-for-new-battery-materials-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/nexeon-and-partners-funded-for-new-battery-materials-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Nexeon and partners funded for new battery materials initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nexeon, the company developing and supplying battery materials for rechargeable Li-ion batteries, is leading a new project to optimise coating technology for its silicon material.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach will result in improved cell performance, and also extend the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">system compatibility of silicon anode materials, allowing use of lower cost electrolyte formulations and lower overall battery cell costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project, named SPICE for Silicon Product Improvement through Coating Enhancement, is already underway, and is expected to take eighteen months to complete.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus of the work will be the use of an optimised coating for improved surface morphology, leading to improved conductivity of the underlying anode material for faster charge rates, and sustained capacity of the battery during charge\/discharge cycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Nexeon (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nexeon.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nexeon<\/a><\/strong> is working with partners <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Phoenix Scientific Industries (PSI) (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"s:\/\/psiltd.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Phoenix Scientific Industries (PSI)<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agmbatteries.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"AGM Batteries (opens in a new tab)\">AGM Batteries<\/a><\/strong> and Oxford University\u2019s Department of Materials, and the team has been awarded \u00a32 million in funding through the Government\u2019s ISCF Faraday Battery Challenge by Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nexeon will lead the project, and apply its expertise in the design and performance of materials for lithium ion batteries. It has already established a laboratory scale coating process for its silicon anode material, and its scale up team has expertise in scaling up high value materials to mass production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A chemical vapour deposition coating process is being designed by PSI, whose experience in producing a similar system for coating powders for a major aerospace company make it an ideal partner in this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AGM Batteries Ltd is the UK\u2019s only cell manufacturer, with significant experience in developing new battery technology and chemistry.
