{"id":13250,"date":"2019-07-12T07:00:38","date_gmt":"2019-07-12T06:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=13250"},"modified":"2019-07-10T16:30:00","modified_gmt":"2019-07-10T15:30:00","slug":"increasing-fluid-power-capabilities-with-additive-manufacturing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/increasing-fluid-power-capabilities-with-additive-manufacturing\/","title":{"rendered":"Increasing fluid power capabilities with additive manufacturing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Global engineering technologies company, Renishaw, recently collaborated with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.renishaw.com\/additive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Domin Fluid Power (opens in a new tab)\">Domin Fluid Power<\/a><\/strong> to help the company maximise productivity when designing and manufacturing direct drive valves.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using metal additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, the company can now manufacture smaller, more efficient drives and reduce cycle times from five and a half hours to just one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Domin collaborated with Renishaw to develop a new, stable, state-of-the-art technology suite for the fluid power sector.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company visited Renishaw\u2019s AM Solutions Centre in Stone, Staffordshire, UK, to develop their understanding of AM and understand how the technology could help them to produce highly efficient drives for customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMetal AM allows you to stretch the art of what is possible in the fluid power sector,\u201d explained Marcus Pont, General Manager of Domin Fluid Power. \u201cAfter spending years on testing different prototypes and designs we have developed our knowledge in AM that will enable us to produce efficient parts for customers. For example, we have designed one of our drives that is 25% of the original size, 25% more powerful and produced at a third of the cost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt Renishaw we are always looking for opportunities to be involved with developing emerging technologies that make positive changes in the industrial world,\u201d explained Martin McMahon, AM Lead Technical Consultant at Renishaw. \u201cWe\u2019ve worked with Domin throughout the whole process, from investigating material properties, to exploring the advantages of using the latest technologies, such as the RenAM 500Q, in production.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAdditive manufacturing is a key technology for Domin,\u201d continued McMahon. \u201cIt gives the company the ability to build complex parts, free of tooling and with minimal operations and assembly. Renishaw\u2019s latest system, the RenAM 500Q, is currently broadening the market appeal of AM into applications that were previously uneconomical due to its efficiency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The compact system features four 500 W lasers to speed up the printing process by up to four times, improving productivity and lowering cost per part.
