{"id":13728,"date":"2019-08-12T07:00:27","date_gmt":"2019-08-12T06:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=13728"},"modified":"2019-08-08T17:08:08","modified_gmt":"2019-08-08T16:08:08","slug":"optimising-engine-design-with-metal-additive-manufacturing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/optimising-engine-design-with-metal-additive-manufacturing\/","title":{"rendered":"Optimising engine design with metal additive manufacturing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Global engineering technologies company, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.renishaw.com\/additive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Renishaw (opens in a new tab)\">Renishaw<\/a><\/strong>, worked with engine manufacturing company Cobra Aero, based in Michigan, USA, to optimise its design processes for aircraft and motorcycle engines.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After working with Renishaw to develop new manufacturing processes, Cobra Aero invested in the AM 400 system to increase its additive manufacturing (AM) capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To optimise the design of its engine cylinders, Cobra Aero worked with Renishaw to gain expertise in AM.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company visited a Renishaw Additive Manufacturing Solutions Centre, USA, and collaborated with Renishaw engineers to use AM to improve the design of a cylinder for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using AM technology allowed Cobra Aero to design a lattice structure to increase airflow, it also allowed them to produce one solid, lightweight part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStaying at the cutting edge of manufacturing is important to Cobra Aero,\u201d explained Sean Hilbert, President of Cobra Aero. \u201cInvesting in AM allows us to develop tools and new products for high value, small volume applications, speed up the manufacturing process and produce designs that would not be possible using conventional subtractive machining.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"653\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/987e67b190b04639b34f9145410d06a3-653x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/987e67b190b04639b34f9145410d06a3-653x1024.jpg 653w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/987e67b190b04639b34f9145410d06a3-191x300.jpg 191w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/987e67b190b04639b34f9145410d06a3-768x1205.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/987e67b190b04639b34f9145410d06a3-800x1255.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 653px) 100vw, 653px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe decided to redesign the cylinder because of its importance in an engine,\u201d continued Hilbert. \u201cDesign changes to this part of the engine must happen rapidly and it is also a high value part, which is why we have chosen to additively manufacture this component.
