{"id":14183,"date":"2019-09-18T10:47:35","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T09:47:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=14183"},"modified":"2019-09-18T10:47:38","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T09:47:38","slug":"the-top-traits-that-could-cost-you-your-job-if-you-work-in-engineering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/the-top-traits-that-could-cost-you-your-job-if-you-work-in-engineering\/","title":{"rendered":"The top traits that could cost you your job if you work in engineering"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>While your skills and experience are key areas companies look at when hiring, a new survey from leading independent job board,\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"CV-Library (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cv-library.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CV-Library<\/a><\/strong>, and CV-writing firm,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.topcv.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"TopCV (opens in a new tab)\">TopCV<\/a><\/strong>, reveals that three-quarters (74.2%) of employers in the engineering industry believe personality is most important when considering someone for a job; more so than your education (12.4%) or appearance (2.2%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey, which quizzed nearly 200 employers on what they look for in candidates, found that after skills (87.6%) and experience (83.1%), organisations across the engineering sector care most about personality, with the top turn-offs including: arrogance (70.1%), dishonesty (67.8%) and unreliability (56.3%). The full breakdown includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Arrogant (70.1%)<\/li><li>Dishonest (67.8%)<\/li><li>Unreliable (56.3%)<\/li><li>Know-it-all (48.3%)<\/li><li>Ignorant (29.9%)<\/li><li>Close-minded (26.4%)<\/li><li>Immoral (24.1%)<\/li><li>Entitled (13.8%)<\/li><li>Short-tempered (11.5%)<\/li><li>Selfish (10.3%)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library comments:\u201cIn the current market, where skills shortages are making it harder for companies to find the right engineering professionals, employers are increasingly opting to recruit on potential over experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So, if you\u2019re looking for a new job right now, you\u2019re in a good position; as long as you impress with the right personality traits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOf course, every hiring manager you meet will have their own preferences, but our research shows that there are a few key areas that could jeopardise your chances of securing a job. From being too arrogant when talking about yourself, to coming across as ignorant or self-centred; these are all traits that we as humans seek to avoid. So, make sure you portray the best version of yourself when meeting with potential employers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, when asked to choose between experience, education and potential, employers across the engineering industry believe potential (62.5%) is more important than experience (33%); while only 4.5% say education is most important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more, when asked about the traits that impress them the most when hiring, employers cite confidence (65.2%), reliability (61.8%), honesty (57.3%), integrity (55.1%), perseverance (28.1%) and self-discipline (27%) as their top choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amanda Augustine, careers expert at TopCV, adds:\u201cHistorically, assessing job seekers was contingent on two factors \u2013 experience and skills \u2013 but our new survey reveals that more intangible qualities, such as personality, are determining which candidates rise to the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s hiring managers are tasked with assessing whether a candidate will fit in with the company culture, and this determination is primarily based on how the candidate behaves during an interview.
