{"id":15682,"date":"2020-02-27T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-27T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=15682"},"modified":"2020-02-25T10:27:05","modified_gmt":"2020-02-25T10:27:05","slug":"wear-resistant-glide-bar-has-a-service-life-that-is-five-times-longer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wear-resistant-glide-bar-has-a-service-life-that-is-five-times-longer\/","title":{"rendered":"Wear-resistant glide bar has a service life that is five times longer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>High speeds on long travels are distinct challenges for energy chain systems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To overcome these issues, igus has developed a more wear-resistant glide bar, which has a service life that is five times longer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Integrated into the rail is the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.igus.co.uk\/smartplastics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">smart plastics<\/a><\/strong> EC.T sensor monitors the condition of the rail and alerts the maintenance team in advance of a breakdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rolling energy chains have been performing in high speed and long travel applications for a long time but are more expensive than conventional energy chains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a complementary, more cost-effective alternative, igus has now developed wear-resistant, high-performance plastic, that is suitable for speeds of over 5m\/s and travels of 200 metres or more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new glide bars with the sensor are suitable for a number of applications, including linear robots in automotive production, on gantries in machine tool construction or on the 7th axis of industrial robots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It consists of a glide bar made from a new high-performance polymer, which has been tested in the company&#8217;s laboratory, providing a service life that is five times longer than the previously used profile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wear-resistant rail is designed in such a way that it moves gently against the energy chain and, to monitor the condition of the glide bar, igus has integrated an EC.T sensor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EC.T sensor measures the condition of the rail and gives maintenance recommendations when needed. It works wirelessly and is battery powered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At regular intervals, it sends a signal about its condition to the communication module icom.
