{"id":17619,"date":"2020-07-31T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=17619"},"modified":"2020-07-30T09:48:49","modified_gmt":"2020-07-30T08:48:49","slug":"what-is-the-future-of-tandem-solar-cells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/what-is-the-future-of-tandem-solar-cells\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the future of tandem solar cells?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A team of researchers from nanotechnology specialist<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/click.agilitypr.delivery\/ls\/click?upn=8eXxSdO-2BzI1Wljvnp-2Fw3fzbVSfluP75LCS5vNceWiA0-3DLD_i_ZbweU1ed1bj-2BKuPidXW1IaS-2FgPtOzWsw1opFUXP9gLbxFPU-2FEuqD22iu-2FF3NRFBQQbSU2Wdq-2F7Y-2F7bKSwsS6VQJe13h05yOvbEpoOBS0y2nRYF27pDxCC2BLkZZgv3-2BFgxmcov5rlKz0DiEiPxpcKFV3sJ4QrkJZznEkrAtGoqVcD7MTgQW4dkArMjhkZRo-2FDPNB3tOKFeiwzQhUEpl-2FlwXvTDAyRrrihGIPQDhdGtPE5FC-2BfifYc-2BydEDrMFYtuNKL4Um-2B1eWICeoUfnRfPOkhIYp76bDCABpKQTHb99l5iMBRTbDXTJASW-2BYWYNtMHP-2B108bFe1fNDP8giKKNS30shru0rSAH9-2F0cZOiPYFV6VdtUByVS-2BrjsBvp-2Bp4wkMDFfwIfphLdY5fEs3qPx1KpIw6sB56RjmDMoKbA-2FhAqM-3D\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nextgen Nano<\/a><\/strong> may have found a new way of accelerating the development of high efficiency organic photovoltaic (OPV) technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nextgen Nano\u2019s latest research demonstrated that a relatively simple material, HSolar, was widely compatible as an interconnecting layer (ICL) with multiple solar cell materials in tandem solar cells.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The material also showed stable performance and high efficiency, which were replicated by several different research groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings are described in the paper High-performance tandem organic solar cells using HSolar as the interconnecting layer, published in the <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/aenm.202000823\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advanced Energy Materials journal<\/a><\/strong><\/em> and featured on the inside cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this research, it is possible for future research groups to fabricate and develop increasingly efficient multi-junction (MJ) OPVs based on the Nextgen Nano team\u2019s recipe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Results of simulations conducted by the team showed that an efficiency greater than 22% could be achieved in the near future based on these findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we are to truly realise a brighter, more sustainable future, we need to accelerate widespread use of OPV technology,\u201d explained Duncan Clark, director of operations at Nextgen Nano. \u201cUnfortunately, organic solar technology has faced several challenges with the likes of efficiency and replication, which has hindered commercialisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe team at Nextgen Nano has taken a crucial step in addressing these problems by not only demonstrating impressive efficiency in OPVs, but by doing so in a way that is proven to be replicable outside of the core research team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research team was led by Nextgen Nano\u2019s chief technology officer Dr Franky So and research scientist Dr Carr Ho. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers first set out to identify means of improving the efficiency of OPVs, which have traditionally been limited by the typically narrow absorption bands of organic semiconductor materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many solar cell researchers have tackled this issue in recent years by layering two complementary solar subcells to create MJ, or tandem, OPV devices that can achieve higher efficiencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ICL provides a physical and electrical contact between subcells, and is essential to minimise the energy losses. The efficacy of the ICL is integral to the efficiency and functioning of MJ solar devices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge so far has been selecting and developing an ICL that does not interfere with the layers underneath, allows efficient charge recombination without a loss in open-circuit voltage and produces replicable results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its study, Nextgen Nano\u2019s PolyPower research team demonstrated an ICL formed of a new version of PEDOT:PSS\u2013HTL Solar (HSolar) and Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles. This ICL can be produced relatively simply using commercially available raw materials.
