{"id":1833,"date":"2017-10-18T15:12:22","date_gmt":"2017-10-18T14:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=1833"},"modified":"2017-10-18T15:12:22","modified_gmt":"2017-10-18T14:12:22","slug":"smaller-camera-designs-help-automakers-add-cameras-without-affecting-styling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/smaller-camera-designs-help-automakers-add-cameras-without-affecting-styling\/","title":{"rendered":"Smaller camera designs help automakers add cameras without affecting styling"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.onsemi.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ON Semiconductor<\/a><\/span> announces of two new highly integrated\u00a01.0 Megapixel (Mp) CMOS image sensing products.<\/p>\n<p>The new parts provide a complete solution with the image sensor and processing functionality integrated within a low power system-on-chip (SoC) that simplifies and speeds adoption in applications such as rear and surround view cameras.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nPCB real estate savings of greater than 30% can be achieved compared to conventional solutions comprised of discrete sensor and processor components.<\/p>\n<p>This helps designers to implement camera solutions without impacting vehicle styling or aesthetics.<\/p>\n<p>The number of cameras and other image sensing technologies\u00a0utilised\u00a0on passenger vehicles continues to increase rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>Industry analyst predictions suggest annual shipments of cameras for use in cars will easily surpass 80 million units by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Sensors that support the progression towards full autonomous driving represent one area of application, while imaging devices such as the\u00a0AS0140\u00a0and\u00a0AS0142\u00a0can be used to improve driver comfort, convenience and safety through a growing range of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).<\/p>\n<p>Integrated sensors can provide vehicle designers with easy-to-implement solutions that support comprehensive and clear views of the vehicle surroundings for drivers.<\/p>\n<p>The AS0140 and AS0142 are both 1\/4-inch format devices capable of supporting 45 fps throughput at full resolution or 60 fps at 720p.<\/p>\n<p>Key features include distortion correction, multi-colour\u00a0overlays and both analogue (NTSC) and digital (Ethernet) interfaces.<\/p>\n<p>Both SoC devices achieve enhanced image quality by making use of the adaptive local tone mapping (ALTM) in order to eliminate artefacts that impinge on the acquisition process.<\/p>\n<p>Dynamic range of 93 decibels (dB) allows new devices to operate effectively in both high and low light applications.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0AS0140 and AS0142\u00a0provide multi-camera\u00a0synchronisation\u00a0support which increases their value to automotive design engineers as the number of cameras installed on vehicles continues to rise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese devices provide engineers with complete SoC camera solutions, that combine low power operation and high dynamic range with minimal impact in relation to PCB footprint and overall bill-of-materials cost,\u201d states Ross Jatou, Vice President and General Manager of the Automotive Imaging Solutions Division at <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/development-toolkit-provides-easier-way-to-build-hearing-aids\/\">ON Semiconductor<\/a><\/span>. \u201cThis means that they are able to meet the imaging demands of car manufacturers from both a logistical and performance perspective. Most current solutions still rely on inefficient discrete arrangements with a separate image sensor and image processor, or are SoCs with relatively limited functionality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both new devices exhibit class-leading power efficiency; when running at\u00a030 fps in high\u00a0dynamic range (HDR) mode, they\u00a0consume just 530 milliwatts (mW).
