While leakage rates are 25% on average, they can reach as much as 80% in some plants. This has significant cost implications as a single 3mm diameter hole in a compressed air pipe can waste \u00a31000 or more annually in electricity bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversely, air leak detection surveys can facilitate significant energy bill reductions; one global manufacturer of connectors and sensors saved \u00a348,000, while one of the UK\u2019s largest food companies saved \u00a345,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ACC34_Leak_Detection-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"710\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ACC34_Leak_Detection-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18855\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ACC34_Leak_Detection-3.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ACC34_Leak_Detection-3-190x300.jpg 190w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Atlas Copco&#8217;s acoustic imaging camera can help detect leaks in compressed air systems up to 10 times faster than traditional methods<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atlas Copco\u2019s air leak detection survey operates by building a profile of the energy wasted through air leakage within a compressed air system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By finding, logging, quantifying, and costing air leaks, the survey allows plant managers and energy specialists to prioritise the remedial work required to reduce their energy costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best, and most popular survey approach is to use ultrasonic leak detection equipment. It operates without interrupting plant production, reaches system areas that are hard to access, and locates all air leaks. Atlas Copco is now achieving this using acoustic imaging camera which can help detect leaks in compressed air systems up to 10 times faster than traditional methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The camera takes measurements with 124 microphones to form a very precise acoustic image. The camera\u2019s bandwidth extends to ultrasonic frequencies, allowing it to locate sound sources precisely, even in a noisy industrial environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ACC34_Leak_Detection-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"313\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ACC34_Leak_Detection-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18856\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ACC34_Leak_Detection-2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ACC34_Leak_Detection-2-300x94.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/ACC34_Leak_Detection-2-768x240.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The acoustic image is superimposed in real-time onto a digital camera picture as a heat map to provide real-time sound visualisation of the leak sources. The heatmap shows each sound source with a single colour governed by the estimated leak flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atlas Copco then provides the customer with easily-understood, actionable information including each leak\u2019s exact source and size in litres\/minute. The leaks are marked on-site with weatherproof tags carrying this information, with an ID number and date.
