{"id":2663,"date":"2017-11-20T08:03:31","date_gmt":"2017-11-20T08:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=2663"},"modified":"2017-11-18T15:04:10","modified_gmt":"2017-11-18T15:04:10","slug":"combating-condensation-in-enclosure-installations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/combating-condensation-in-enclosure-installations\/","title":{"rendered":"Combating condensation in enclosure installations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>With proper planning and design it\u2019s possible to protect your connections, says Chris Lloyd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The recipe for condensation is simple: water vapour and fluctuating temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>In all but the most controlled of environments this means that electrical installations are at risk of water damage caused by condensation forming inside an enclosure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic1_PR4659_42848.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2664 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic1_PR4659_42848-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic1_PR4659_42848-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic1_PR4659_42848-800x1120.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic1_PR4659_42848-768x1075.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic1_PR4659_42848-731x1024.jpg 731w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic1_PR4659_42848.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a>Firstly, it\u2019s important to understand why condensation occurs and which types of electrical installation are most at risk.<\/p>\n<p>As we know, condensation describes the changing physical state of water from gas into liquid \u2013 typically caused by the gas coming into contact with a colder surface.<\/p>\n<p>So, condensation is a risk in any environment where water vapour will be found in the air and where temperature fluctuations occur.<\/p>\n<p>While the water vapour content of air will vary from place to place depending on air pressure and temperature, it will be present in all but the most tightly controlled of environments.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when at sea level a volume of air measuring 30\u00b0C can contain up to 4% water vapour.<\/p>\n<p>As for temperature fluctuations, every electrical application generates heat and air temperatures naturally rise and fall throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>Despite understanding the simple premise of what causes condensation many designers and installers are guilty of overlooking the issue when working on a new installation, often incorrectly thinking that the IP rated enclosures they are working with will provide protection.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic2_PR4659_42860.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2665 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic2_PR4659_42860-239x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic2_PR4659_42860-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic2_PR4659_42860-800x1003.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic2_PR4659_42860-768x963.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic2_PR4659_42860-817x1024.jpg 817w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic2_PR4659_42860.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a>IP ratings measure the ability of an enclosure to protect against ingress from solid particles and moisture (liquid rather than gas). Even an IP69 enclosures is not completely airtight, so will not protect against water vapour.<\/p>\n<p>Once the installation is made and the enclosure is sealed the temperature differential between the air in the room and in the enclosure will lead to pressure changes, which in turn will draw moisture rich air into the enclosure.<\/p>\n<p>Once inside if the air contacts with the cooler enclosure walls condensation will occur and pool around the bottom of the enclosure.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, this is a bigger problem for enclosures with a high IP rating, as it\u2019s less likely that the water will escape the enclosure before causing harm to the electrics.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t to say that it\u2019s impossible to combat against condensation. In fact with some basic planning during design, and by following a few simple rules during installation, there is no reason why condensation should impact on the integrity of your installation.<\/p>\n<p>Enclosures specification is the first thing to consider, and will play a vital role in protecting your installation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic3_PR4659_42869.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2666 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic3_PR4659_42869-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic3_PR4659_42869-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic3_PR4659_42869-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic3_PR4659_42869-800x1066.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic3_PR4659_42869-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Spels338_Pic3_PR4659_42869.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Firstly, only specify an enclosure to the IP rating that is needed for the applications. Not only will you reduce installation time and save money, but, as explained above, this will reduce the risk of condensation build-up inside the enclosure.<\/p>\n<p>Enclosure dimensions should also be considered. While many designers may feel that tight packaging and a smaller footprint is the best option, it may be appropriate to design in extra space to allow for air flow.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible to further design against condensation by adding ventilation.<\/p>\n<p>Most enclosure suppliers should be able to work with you during design to offer customisation to include air vents in an appropriate position on the enclosure.<\/p>\n<p>Spelsberg has taken enclosures ventilation one step further with the AK Air range, which features an integrated ventilation system.<\/p>\n<p>The valves are designed into the enclosure walls to provide pressure and temperature regulation while still delivering IP65 protection \u2013 protecting against water spray from all directions.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nOf course even the best enclosures can only provide so much protection, so it\u2019s the job of good engineers to take simple measures during installation to further alleviate potential problems, for example:<\/p>\n<p>* Position enclosures away from direct sunlight, heat sources, etc.<\/p>\n<p>* Avoid locations where there are likely to be temperature fluctuations, such as in kitchens or near furnaces if possible.<\/p>\n<p>* Steer clear of damp areas, waterside locations and places where steam or water splashes are possible.<\/p>\n<p>* Ensure there is enough space around the enclosure for air circulation.<\/p>\n<p>* If an enclosure is to be wall-mounted, it may be appropriate to provide an airspace or heat sink between the wall and enclosure.<br \/>\nDespite the ever present risk of condensation there is no reason why you shouldn\u2019t be able to protect your connections from damage.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s engineers are often asked to examine instances where an installation has been damaged due to condensation build -up and it\u2019s always easy to see how it occurred and offer a solution to combat it.<\/p>\n<p>I would always recommend working with an enclosure supplier who is able to offer engineering support and customisation capabilities to make sure that protection is designed into your solution from the start.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Lloyd is Managing Director of <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spelsberg.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spelsberg UK<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With proper planning and design it\u2019s possible to protect your connections, says Chris Lloyd The recipe for condensation is simple: water vapour and fluctuating temperatures.
