He makes the case that\u00a0AI systems should have an Energy Impact Rating\u00a0and outlines the benefits that will bringus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands as a beacon of innovation, offering transformative advances across almost every sector. But as AI becomes more powerful and more pervasive, it brings with it a growing dilemma: its hunger for energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Blogs\/Articles\/2025\/05\/13\/ai-needs-more-abundant-power-supplies-to-keep-driving-economic-growth\">International Monetary Fund (IMF)<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and other global observers, AI is becoming an increasingly large contributor to energy demand, driven by massive data centres, high-intensity model training, and real-time inference at scale. The question is no longer whether AI will impact the climate, it is how we ensure it helps rather than harms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Training a single large language model can consume as much energy as a small town uses in a week. As deployment scales across healthcare, finance, manufacturing and government, global data centre energy demand is expected to more than double by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This growth is unsustainable without significant changes to infrastructure, regulation, and design philosophy. Ironically, some of the most promising use cases for AI are in making other systems more energy-efficient:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Smart energy grids<\/strong>\u00a0using AI for demand forecasting and renewable energy balancing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Building automation systems<\/strong>\u00a0that optimise lighting, heating and cooling in real time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI-enhanced chip design<\/strong>\u00a0reducing the energy footprint of next-generation hardware<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI for battery management<\/strong>, as with Apple\u2019s new AI-powered system in iOS 19, which extends battery life by intelligently learning user behaviour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re also seeing innovations in neuromorphic computing and event-driven AI models (e.g. the Spiking Neural Network) which consume drastically less energy than traditional deep learning models, in some cases, approaching the efficiency of biological systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In these scenarios, AI does not just &#8216;offset&#8217; its own footprint. It could eliminate meaningful power usage altogether, particularly when deployed on-device or in ultra-low-power environments like edge IoT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, should AI have an energy label? Yes, and urgently. Consumers now expect energy ratings on fridges, washing machines and televisions. Should we not expect the same transparency for AI? Imagine an AI system with an Energy Impact Rating, clearly indicating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Model training cost in kWh<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inference energy per user session<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hosting efficiency (green hosting or fossil-based?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This would:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Help customers and businesses choose responsibly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Push vendors to optimise for energy as well as performance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allow regulators to set efficiency standards for AI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For AI to continue driving economic growth without derailing net-zero targets, we need a shared response:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Policymakers must create incentives for energy-efficient model design and deployment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Companies should disclose the energy use of their AI systems, not just the outcomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developers must bake energy constraints into their system design from day one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Investors should ask not only,\u00a0\u201cWhat can this model do?\u201d\u00a0but\u00a0\u201cWhat does it cost the planet to do it?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Brian-Williamson_smaller-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Brian-Williamson_smaller-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Brian-Williamson_smaller-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Brian-Williamson_smaller-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Brian-Williamson_smaller-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Brian-Williamson_smaller-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Brian-Williamson_smaller-1638x2048.jpg 1638w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Brian-Williamson_smaller-scaled.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dr Brian Williamson, Chief Strategy Officer at Kreoh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>AI will not magically reach a zero-carbon footprint.
