High-speed digital feedback plays a vital role in ensuring the correct functioning and availability of motor-driven systems such as steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire, and active suspension. By replacing analog interfaces with digital protocols, designers can reduce wiring complexity and weight, while enabling faster and more comprehensive onboard diagnostics (OBD).

The MLX90382 is engineered to meet the industry’s shift toward x-by-wire and other fully digital feedback architectures, while maintaining the high reliability and cost-effectiveness expected by automotive OEMs and Tier 1s. It combines a Hall effect magnetic front end, an analogue-to-digital converter (ADC), on-chip digital signal processing (DSP) with zero latency, and multiple output options. The IC leverages Melexis’ latest Triaxis technology, detecting the three components of magnetic flux density (Bx, By, and Bz) and measuring the differential magnetic field in the Z-axis to track absolute angle position and speed with high precision. With speeds of up to 200,000 e-rpm and a 360° SFI of up to 4 kA/m, the device ensures reliable operation even in demanding automotive environments, such as within electric vehicles (EVs).

To support different system architectures, the MLX90382 offers on- and off-axis mounting, enabling use in hollow-shaft applications where wiring looms or components need to pass through the shaft without compromising encoder performance. The device output supports ABI, UVW, PWM, SPI, and SSI interfaces, making it suitable for a wide range of automotive motor control systems.

The device is available in two packages: QFN24 (single-die) and TSSOP16 (dual-die), supporting 5V and 3.3V applications. Automotive-grade robustness is ensured through AEC-Q100 (Grade 0) qualification. Operating over a -40°C to 150°C temperature range, the device meets the requirements of demanding E-chassis and comfort applications. Functional safety being a key element in E-chassis applications, the product has been developed according to the ISO 26262:2018 standard and supports ASIL D system integration in its dual die variant.

“Automotive manufacturers are rapidly transitioning to fully digital feedback systems to enable x-by-wire architectures and meet rising safety and availability demands. As part of our ever-growing portfolio of magnetic position sensors, the new MLX90382 meets the needs of steering, braking, and suspension systems head-on,” said Klaus Wilczek, Global Marketing Director at Melexis. He continued: “This latest variant brings those benefits to automotive engineers looking for safe digital protocols, improved on-board diagnostics and simple stray field robust designs — with more innovations still to come”.

Melexis extends its absolute magnetic and inductive encoder portfolio with an automotive-grade variant of the MLX90382.
