Engineering professionals think so!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly three quarters (71.4%) of workers in the UK engineering sector believe that the traditional 9-5 is an outdated concept, with the majority (75%) admitting that they work better at certain times of day.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to a recent study from <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cv-library.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CV-Library<\/a><\/span>, the UK\u2019s independent job site.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nThe survey of 1,200 professionals explored how workers feel about 9-5 working hours, and whether these are still fit for purpose.<\/p>\n<p>The data revealed that the majority (55.7%) of professionals in the <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/its-your-move-engineering-is-one-of-the-top-10-industries-to-find-a-job-in-right-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">engineering sector<\/a><\/span> would prefer to <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/overtime-outrage-engineers-are-putting-in-more-than-13-extra-days-of-work-a-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work hours<\/a><\/span> that suited their natural pattern and when they work best.<\/p>\n<p>When asked what time of day they are most productive, respondents cited the following:<\/p>\n<p>In the morning \u2013 68.3%<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon \u2013 19%<\/p>\n<p>In the evening \u20137.9%<\/p>\n<p>Late at night \u2013 4.8%<\/p>\n<p>Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/nearly-half-of-engineering-professionals-are-unhappy-in-their-current-role\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CV-Library<\/a><\/span>, comments: \u201cThere are ongoing debates surrounding the traditional 9-5 and whether this \u2018one size fits all\u2019 approach is still beneficial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear from the data that engineering professionals know their own work patterns and would prefer to tailor their working hours around when they\u2019re at their most productive. If your employer offers flexible working be sure to use this to the advantage of both yourself and the business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile a more flexible style of working can be great, it does tend to bring with it issues of work-life balance and doing away with the structured 9-5 could further blur the lines between your work and private life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShould you choose to operate on more flexible hours, it\u2019s vital that you ensure you are sticking to your contracted hours and are not becoming overworked by putting in too much overtime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, the majority (83.3%) of professionals in the industry believe that all businesses should offer flexible working, and yet only a quarter (26.2%) have the opportunity to work from home when they want to.<\/p>\n<p>Those who do have the option to work from home were asked where they felt they worked best and interestingly, 18.2% said they work better in the office.<\/p>\n<p>A further 36.4% said they worked best at home and the remaining 45.5% said they work just as well in either location.<\/p>\n<p>Biggins concludes: \u201cFlexible working is becoming increasingly popular, and is a factor you should take into consideration when conducting your job search.
