Manchester has been named the UK’s leading city for manufacturing in 2026, according to the Tadweld UK Manufacturing Index<\/strong><\/a>, a new study ranking Britain’s manufacturing hotspots based on growth, workforce strength, investment, transport connectivity, property affordability, business support and long-term manufacturer success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The index shows that Manchester ranks top of the rankings with a manufacturing momentum score of 9.1 out of 10. The city’s position reflects strong manufacturing investment, excellent transport links, a highly skilled engineering workforce, thriving industrial clusters and a proven track record of manufacturers succeeding and expanding over the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manchester was followed closely by Sheffield (9.0), Birmingham and the West Midlands (8.9), and Liverpool (8.8), creating a highly competitive top tier of manufacturing destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n

Manchester secured first place due to its combination of strong business growth, industrial investment, logistics infrastructure and workforce availability. The city continues to benefit from major regeneration projects, advanced manufacturing investment and one of the UK’s largest engineering talent pools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheffield ranked second thanks to its longstanding reputation as one of Britain’s strongest locations for steel, fabrication and advanced manufacturing, supported by a highly skilled workforce and excellent manufacturer retention rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Birmingham and the West Midlands secured third place, driven by their central location, extensive supply chain networks and significant contribution to UK manufacturing output, while Liverpool’s strong port connectivity and growing manufacturing investment helped secure fourth place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report comes at a time when manufacturers continue to face rising operational costs, inflationary pressures and increased taxation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chris Houston, Managing Director at Tadweld<\/strong><\/a>, said: “Manchester’s position at the top of the rankings reflects exactly what manufacturers need in today’s environment \u2013 access to skilled people, strong infrastructure, investment confidence and a business ecosystem where companies can grow over the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What stands out from the data is how close the competition is between Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham and Liverpool. Each city offers a slightly different strength, whether that’s workforce expertise, logistics, supply chain access or industrial investment, but all four have demonstrated remarkable resilience over the last five years.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: “Taxation is a necessary part of funding public services, and businesses recognise that responsibility. But when you examine the numbers in detail, the scale of contribution from a single SME is significant. One company employing 50 people and generating over \u00a31 million a year for HMRC represents a meaningful fiscal footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The government rightly wants businesses to invest, innovate and create jobs. But every increase in business costs reduces the amount manufacturers can put back into apprenticeships, automation, machinery and productivity improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That’s why it’s particularly commendable that so many manufacturers across the UK are continuing to grow, invest and create jobs despite the challenges they face. Succeeding as a manufacturer in 2026 and beyond is not easy, and many businesses are doing an exceptional job simply keeping their heads above water while continuing to deliver for customers, employees and the wider economy.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the Index, Tadweld also highlights locations where manufacturers face the greatest barriers to growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The five most challenging locations identified were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    London topped the challenge rankings due to exceptionally high industrial property costs and operating expenses, which continue to make large-scale manufacturing difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Cambridge and Oxford, while world-renowned for research and innovation, were found to lack the industrial space required to support significant manufacturing expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Brighton’s economy has increasingly shifted towards service and creative sectors, reducing opportunities for industrial growth, while Aberdeen continues to face uncertainty as manufacturers adapt to the long-term transition away from traditional oil and gas activity.<\/p>\n\n\n

    Commenting on the findings, Houston said: “Cities such as Aberdeen illustrate how broader economic changes can affect manufacturing confidence. Businesses operating in regions undergoing major industrial transitions often face greater uncertainty when making long-term investment decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    “Likewise, cities such as London, Oxford and Cambridge remain exceptional places for innovation, but manufacturers require more than innovation alone. They need affordable industrial space, robust supply chains, transport connectivity and access to skilled labour. Without those fundamentals, manufacturing growth becomes increasingly difficult.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Data was compiled from a combination of publicly available national and regional datasets, including the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Companies House, the Department for Business and Trade, Make UK industry reports, regional economic development agencies, local authority investment reports and commercial property market data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
