The combination of high strength, low density and heat resistance makes the material indispensable for demanding structural components such as aircraft structures, engine suspensions and landing gear components. At the same time, the very properties that make titanium so valuable for aerospace applications ensure that the material can only be machined reliably under high requirements.

Based on its experience with aerospace applications, CERATIZIT has identified three closely linked challenges that significantly determine process reliability: concentrated heat at the cutting edge, tool wear that is difficult to predict, and the need to remove large volumes of material without endangering high-quality components. The company counters all three with a coordinated machining system for carbide grade CTC5240, suitable tools, a controlled coolant supply, application-specific cutting data and technical support from experts.

“These three challenges cannot be solved independently of each other,” says Manuel Höfferer, Application Specialist Aerospace and Defence at CERATIZIT. “Heat influences wear, wear affects process reliability and process reliability determines how productively material can be removed. The solution must therefore combine carbide grade, geometry, tool body, coolant supply and machining strategy.”

Control cutting edge temperature through tool and process design

Due to the low thermal conductivity of titanium, the heat generated during machining can only be dissipated from the machining zone insufficiently.

Instead, the thermal stress is concentrated at the tool cutting edge, while the material retains its high strength even during cutting. This combination places high thermal and mechanical demands on the carbide substrate as well as on the coating and cutting edge geometry.

CERATIZIT meets this challenge with CTC5240, a carbide grade specially developed for milling titanium in the aerospace industry. The thermally conductive substrate and CVD coating architecture are designed for heat control, wear resistance, and cutting edge stability. The grade is combined with special geometries, controlled operating conditions and a targeted coolant supply. In this way, temperature is identified as part of the overall process and is not considered an isolated tool feature.

Making tool wear a predictable variable

Titanium’s chemical reactivity, its tendency to build up edges, and its elastic springback can promote adhesion, chipping, notched wear, coating stress, and friction on the open surface. These mechanisms can reinforce each other and rapidly drive wear. This makes tool changes and machining results difficult to plan.

The CERATIZIT solution is therefore designed for controlled, reproducible wear behaviour and not for a single peak value in service life. CTC5240 forms the material-specific basis, while the milling body, cutting edge preparation, concentricity control, cutting parameters and application technology are adapted to the respective operation. This system logic enables measurable service life, plannable change intervals and more safety during long machining sequences.

More machining performance without increased component risk

In the case of aircraft structural components, large volumes of titanium often have to be removed from forged or solid material. Manufacturers therefore need competitive metal removal volumes and at the same time must protect the components that already contain considerable material, preparation and machining value. A mere increase in cutting data can increase thermal and mechanical loads and provoke additional process risks.

If, on the other hand, the tool solution is adapted to the respective component feature and the machining environment, productivity and process reliability can be reconciled. Deep pockets, thin walls, large cantilevers and interrupted cuts each require different combinations of tool system, engagement strategy, coolant supply and cutting data. Processes such as synchronous milling, controlled intervention conditions and consistent concentricity control help to convert the performance of CTC5240 into stable material removal under real production conditions.

Securing qualified processes through security of supply

For manufacturers in the aerospace industry, process stability does not end at the machine: availability, qualification and long-term supply continuity are also decisive factors. Re-qualifying a machining process can quickly become cost-intensive in aerospace programs. Therefore, tool availability and security of supply are an important part of customer benefits.

CERATIZIT combines its expertise in titanium milling with a stable carbide value chain. These include the company’s integrated value chain, expertise in carbide recycling and security of supply for Western markets. This gives the technical solution another important dimension: Customers not only need a tool solution with outstanding machining performance, but also a partner who can support qualified processes in the long term.

Expert knowledge for application-specific solutions

There are no universally valid cutting parameters for titanium components in the aerospace industry. The right solution depends on the alloy, component geometry, machine conditions, machining task and production goal. “Every titanium application is different,” says Manuel Höfferer. “Our task is to combine carbide grade development, selection of the tool system, cutting data and application expertise into a process strategy that corresponds to the customer’s specific component and manufacturing conditions.”

Anyone who understands these relationships technicallyIf you would like to take a look at the company, you can download the white paper “High-performance milling of titanium alloys for the aerospace industry”. It sheds light on the importance of temperature, wear behavior, tool concepts, coolant supply and machining strategy and illustrates these using examples from titanium machining. A supplementary brochure provides an overview of the corresponding tool systems and areas of application.

Titanium is one of the key materials in modern aerospace manufacturing.
