Quality technology providers should keep moving toward deeper integration, greater usability, and production-ready outputs. End users should make assurance capability part of their platform evaluation criteria. And the industry as a whole should recognise that quality is not someone else’s problem. David Menzies reports

Metal additive manufacturing has reached a point where no serious person argues about its potential. The argument now is about control.

Can parts be produced repeatably? Can process variation be understood early enough? Can evidence be generated in a way that quality teams, customers, and regulators can trust? Can AM move from impressive individual successes to stable, scalable production?

These are not small questions. They sit at the heart of whether metal AM becomes a mainstream production technology or remains limited by caution, inspection cost, and qualification complexity.

That is why the wider ecosystem around AM machines matters so much. Machine OEMs, software companies, monitoring specialists, materials suppliers, post-processing providers, inspection houses, and qualification experts all contribute to the industrialisation of the process. No single organisation owns the whole answer. The machine is central, but it is not the whole production system.

This mindset needs to come into consideration when decisions are being made for improvements to machine platforms or for the generation of new platforms. Process flow, quality and usability should all be core elements of the product design alongside the core processes of the laser powder bed process.

Buying a route for production

Metal AM is no longer a closed hardware sale. It is becoming a validated production environment. Customers are not simply buying a printer, they are buying a route to production. They are buying confidence. They are buying a process they can prove, repeat, govern, and defend. Quality assurance is central to that promise.

At the same time, the industry is asking customers in aerospace, defence, medical, energy, and other demanding sectors to trust AM for more ambitious applications. These customers are being told that in-situ monitoring can reduce uncertainty, support qualification, improve process understanding, enable earlier decisions, and reduce the burden of discovering problems too late.

QA cannot be treated as an afterthought

The AM industry cannot afford to treat quality assurance as a peripheral add-on while simultaneously relying on quality assurance to unlock adoption. If the market wants more regulated production, more large-format adoption, more multi-laser scale-up, and greater customer trust, then the technologies that support evidence generation must be treated as part of the production architecture.

If a design change affects optical access, chamber visibility, sensor mounting, data interfaces, signal capture, calibration, serviceability, environmental stability, or post-build evidence pathways, then it may affect more than the machine itself. It may affect the customer’s ability to validate production. It may affect monitoring deployments already in place. It may affect qualification strategies already in progress. It may affect commercial confidence in AM as a scalable production route.

Collaboration is the stronger route

The strongest path forward is collaboration.

There is already a positive model for this in the work between Nikon SLM Solutions and Additive Assurance. Their collaboration around AMiRIS Inside on the Nikon SLM Solutions NXG platform points to a more mature view of the market, one in which in-situ quality assurance is not treated as an afterthought, but as part of the production proposition itself.

That distinction matters. As metal AM moves into larger, faster, multi-laser production systems, customers no longer judge platforms only by build size, laser count, or productivity. They increasingly ask whether the machine can help them generate evidence, manage process risk, understand build behaviour, and move toward validated production with fewer late-stage surprises.

This is where AMiRIS has clear relevance. Its value is not simply that it observes the build. Its value lies in helping turn in-process data into usable quality intelligence (anomaly detection, layer and build analysis, reporting, localisation, comparison, traceability, and a clearer basis for production and quality review).

For manufacturers, this is commercially important. Productivity is not only limited by how quickly a machine can build. It is limited by how quickly a business can trust what has been built.

Late-stage inspection, cautious over-testing, rework loops, delayed release decisions, repeat qualification activity, and uncertainty around process behaviour all create drag. They consume capacity, slow programmes, make quality teams more conservative, and make customers hesitate.

In-situ assurance addresses this by moving evidence upstream, while there is still time to understand, contain, review, or act.

From isolated machines to connected production systems

If quality assurance is now central to industrial AM, then machine design should preserve and enable the pathways that allow assurance technologies to function properly. Optical access, chamber integration, data flow, calibration routes, and software workflows are not peripheral details. They are part of the production value proposition.

The Nikon SLM Solutions and Additive Assurance collaboration shows what constructive ecosystem thinking can look like. It demonstrates that machine builders and specialist QA providers do not need to occupy competing territory. They can bring different strengths to the same industrial problem — how to help customers produce metal AM parts with greater confidence, less uncertainty, and a clearer route to scale.

That is how AM will further industrialise, not through isolated technology claims, but through connected systems that make the whole production environment stronger.

David Menzies, Chief Commercial Officer, Additive Assurance

The future is bright

Machine OEMs should continue to innovate, but with awareness of the surrounding ecosystem. End users should make assurance capability part of their platform evaluation criteria. And the industry as a whole should recognise that quality is not someone else’s problem.

Metal AM has spent years proving that it can make remarkable parts. The next phase is about proving that it can make them reliably, repeatedly, and economically.

That will not happen through machines alone. It will happen when machines, sensors, software, assurance systems, data structures, and quality workflows mature together.

The machine matters. The sensor matters. The software matters. The evidence matters. And if the industry wants customers to scale metal AM with confidence, it must protect and strengthen the pathways that allow quality assurance to do its work.

AMiRIS exists because manufacturers need to reduce uncertainty, not add complexity. The strongest OEM relationships will be the ones that understand that. Nikon SLM Solutions has shown how this can work.

The future of AM will be built by an ecosystem, not a silo.

David Menzies is Chief Commercial Officer, Additive Assurance.

Machine OEMs should continue to innovate, but with awareness of the surrounding ecosystem.
