{"id":4197,"date":"2018-01-29T13:12:19","date_gmt":"2018-01-29T13:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=4197"},"modified":"2018-01-29T13:12:54","modified_gmt":"2018-01-29T13:12:54","slug":"taking-pneumatic-process-control-to-a-new-level","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/taking-pneumatic-process-control-to-a-new-level\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking pneumatic process control to a new level"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Craig Kerr looks at some of the latest developments and features that are providing even more functionality for a host of applications<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Automated process control has delivered a host of benefits to industries such as <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/more-function-modules-for-compact-water-analysis-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">water treatment<\/a><\/span>, food and beverage and pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n<p>Increasing productivity, safety and cleanliness are just a few of the advantages to controlling a range of processes with either centralised or distributed pneumatic automation.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nModular valve islands coupled with power supplies and PLCs create a powerful automation tool that has been used for many years, especially in hygienic environments.<\/p>\n<p>Process data is used to control large numbers of process valves to maximise efficiency and productivity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4200\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4200\" style=\"width: 618px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/BURKERT419___8647_Airline_Pic2_PR4769_44283.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4200\" src=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/BURKERT419___8647_Airline_Pic2_PR4769_44283-1024x850.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/BURKERT419___8647_Airline_Pic2_PR4769_44283-1024x850.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/BURKERT419___8647_Airline_Pic2_PR4769_44283-800x664.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/BURKERT419___8647_Airline_Pic2_PR4769_44283-300x249.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/BURKERT419___8647_Airline_Pic2_PR4769_44283-768x637.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">B\u00fcrkert has included an electronic pressure module, which provides continuous measurement of the pneumatic supply pressure and offers four threshold values that can be configured to the application<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, there is always room for improvement and some of the most recent developments will deliver considerable enhancements to current design, commissioning and operation capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>System integration is a crucial feature of any pneumatic control island and each integrator will use a preferred PLC manufacturer in order to simplify commissioning and maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>By working closely with the PLC manufacturers, designers of pneumatic control stations are able to streamline both the design and installation process.<\/p>\n<span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/burkert-pneumatic-control-valve-island-interfaces-directly-with-siemens-et-200sp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B\u00fcrkert<\/a><\/span> has achieved this in cooperation with Siemens, one of the leading PLC manufacturers, to the point that B\u00fcrkert modules are now included in the Siemens project planning software.<\/p>\n<p>The complete integration with Siemens Step7 software makes design, installation and testing of any new system much easier.<\/p>\n<p>Once the planning and commissioning has been completed, the day-to-day operation of modern flow control systems is also changing for the better.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, while everything is working properly the maintenance team can concentrate on other tasks. The real challenge is being able to resolve any issues and implement changes quickly and with a minimum of disruption to the process.<\/p>\n<p>Until recently, the pneumatic control valves within the valve island have had very little diagnostic ability, which could make fault-finding quite time consuming.<\/p>\n<p>However, this has now changed with the introduction of the Type 8647 AirLINE SP valve island from B\u00fcrkert. With a direct internal connection, all of the valves in the B\u00fcrkert island can now be seen as digital outputs on the Siemens operating system.<\/p>\n<p>An integrated liquid crystal display also shows pilot valve status, switching status of the process valve, current pressure values, switching cycle counter as well as a diagnostic report. This makes commissioning and maintenance much simpler, providing fast and permanent fault diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>The AirLINE SP also uses ring networking topology and a media redundancy protocol (MRP) to ensure continued operation of the system in the event that a communication node fails. This increases system availability and ensures the reliability of the customer\u2019s process.<\/p>\n<p>Designed for complete integration with the Siemens I\/O system SIMATIC ET 200SP, the latest development in valve island technology has been designed with a host of new features.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the diagnostic capabilities, B\u00fcrkert has included an electronic pressure module, which provides continuous measurement of the pneumatic supply pressure and offers four threshold values that can be configured to the application.<\/p>\n<p>The module provides three possible status indicators: OK, warning and error for both low and high pressures.<\/p>\n<p>Several innovations have also been designed-in to improve real-world reliability: Firstly, check valves have been integrated into the exhaust duct to prevent unwanted valve switching, which can result from uncontrolled pressure peaks when several valves operate at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>In the unlikely event of a valve needing to be replaced, a \u2018hot swap\u2019 function allows valves to be changed during plant operation with no downtime.<\/p>\n<p>The process of exchanging two valves causes no recognisable pressure drop, allowing the application process to continue unhindered.<\/p>\n<p>Another significant development is the ability to incorporate volt-free contacts that are used in safety circuits.<\/p>\n<p>The <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/using-industry-4-0-to-optimise-process-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B\u00fcrkert<\/a><\/span> valve island can implement fail-safe automation tasks with its safety shut down feature which offers potential-free and electro-mechanical contacts to shut down a process channel.<\/p>\n<p>Now all of these features have been combined into one package that is fully compatible with the Siemens I\/O system SIMATIC ET 200SP, pneumatic process control has achieved a new level of integration and performance.
