{"id":4554,"date":"2018-02-12T07:30:56","date_gmt":"2018-02-12T07:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=4554"},"modified":"2018-02-10T12:38:32","modified_gmt":"2018-02-10T12:38:32","slug":"sulzer-doubles-capacity-of-high-voltage-testing-to-improve-repair-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/sulzer-doubles-capacity-of-high-voltage-testing-to-improve-repair-times\/","title":{"rendered":"Sulzer doubles capacity of high voltage testing to improve repair times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Performance testing of high voltage motors and generators is usually carried out to determine benchmark data following a major repair.<\/p>\n<p>However, increasingly, customers are requiring this information as part of a problem diagnosis or to verify performance figures for a component when its essential data has been lost.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nTo keep up with growing demand, <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sulzer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sulzer<\/a><\/span> has made a major investment at its Falkirk Service Centre that will enable the test-bed load capacity to be doubled.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, the Falkirk site has used a 1,250kVA diesel generator that operates through two step-up transformers to provide 3.3 &#8211; 11kV via high voltage switchgear to the test cell. This set-up ensures a reliable power source for testing that is not affected by local demand on the power grid.<\/p>\n<p>The new investment by <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/sulzer-chemtech-and-sgl-group-extend-co-operation-related-to-column-internals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sulzer<\/a><\/span> will add a 2,000kVA and a 700 kVA generator to the site that will be synchronized through a 4000ALV switchboard, as well as a new 2,500kVA transformer, that will double the capacity of the test bed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2MW load testing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The original capacity of the service centre was 1,000 kW in load testing, of which 800kW could be used for testing vertically-orientated motors, across a full range of voltages from 400V up to 11kV at both 50 and 60Hz.<\/p>\n<p>The installation of the new equipment will increase the load testing capacity to 2,000kW for horizontally-orientated motors as well an increase in voltage to 13.8 kV.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4556\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4556\" style=\"width: 618px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic2_PR4748_37310.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4556\" src=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic2_PR4748_37310-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic2_PR4748_37310-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic2_PR4748_37310-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic2_PR4748_37310-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic2_PR4748_37310-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic2_PR4748_37310-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic2_PR4748_37310-800x800.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic2_PR4748_37310.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4556\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A comprehensive test includes performance data, vibration analysis, partial discharge figures and motor current signal analysis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The majority of the equipment tested in the additional capacity will be large, high voltage, AC motors, but the possibility to test DC motors up to 600V, with a loading up to 800 amps will still remain.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, an additional test-bed area is now in place to allow multiple motors to be tested alongside each other. This means that if the testing of one motor needs to be extended, it will not hold up other projects, allowing equipment to be returned to customers even more efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>The new test bed offers customers the possibility of load testing generators using a slave motor to turn the generator and connecting the output to a load bank.<\/p>\n<p>In this way, generators that have undergone major repairs can be tested to ensure that they are fit for purpose before they are re-installed and recommissioned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Improved customer experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As part of this upgrade project, the test area is equipped with the latest monitoring controls and safety equipment that provide the test engineers with remote visualisations of the sensor readings while protecting them from large pieces of rotating equipment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4557\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4557\" style=\"width: 618px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic3_PR4748_37323.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4557\" src=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic3_PR4748_37323-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic3_PR4748_37323-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic3_PR4748_37323-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic3_PR4748_37323-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/SulzerDMA179_Pic3_PR4748_37323-800x571.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4557\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new control center provides remote visualizations of performance data for both test engineers and customers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A customer viewing area is also available, from where owners of equipment can watch and interact with the test engineers to ensure that the entire process is transparent and straightforward.<\/p>\n<p>Marc Stuart, Assistant General Manager, at <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/maintenance-contract-from-sulzer-at-edf-energy-nuclear-site\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sulzer<\/a><\/span>\u2019s Falkirk Service Centre comments: \u201cIn the past, only equipment that had undergone a major repair would have received a full-load performance test. Now, more and more customers are requesting full-load testing following an overhaul, giving them complete peace of mind that the equipment is fit for purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur customers are now able to see their motor operating at full load and can review a complete set of test results, including vibration analysis, partial discharge, motor current signal analysis (MCSA) and other condition monitoring data.
