{"id":4690,"date":"2018-02-19T08:00:25","date_gmt":"2018-02-19T08:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=4690"},"modified":"2018-02-19T16:58:46","modified_gmt":"2018-02-19T16:58:46","slug":"leakkiller-challenge-rs-components-announces-winners-of-open-source-iot-design-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/leakkiller-challenge-rs-components-announces-winners-of-open-source-iot-design-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"LeakKiller Challenge: RS Components announces winners of open source IoT design competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RS Components (RS) has announced the winners of its unique open source IoT design competition \u2014 the <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/15000-prize-for-the-best-design-prototype-of-low-cost-open-source-iot-leakage-detection-and-warning-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LeakKiller Challenge<\/a><\/span> \u2014 in association with Legal &amp; General (L&amp;G).<\/p>\n<p>With \u00a32.5m paid out by buildings and contents insurers every day for damage caused by water leaks, RS and Legal &amp; General launched the LeakKiller Challenge in September 2017.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>The objective was to find the best open source design prototype for a low-cost, IoT leakage detection and warning system.<\/p>\n<p>The goal being that, in time, the best prototype(s) could potentially be productised and used to protect customers\u2019 homes and belongings, thus reducing insurance premiums\/excess.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the very complex nature of the challenge and the detailed three-stage entry requirements, the judges were delighted with the quality and depth of entries.<\/p>\n<p>Although the judges concluded that no single entry had adequately solved all three distinct areas of the challenge, two entries solved one area each, both winning category awards, while another three entries each received special awards. All winners received a cash prize.<\/p>\n<p>Winner of the Best Flow Detector category was recent UK-based engineering graduate ElectricJosh with his Smart Leak Detection System with Sensor Network.<\/p>\n<p>Automation and Control engineer Adamsky\u2019s water blocker won the Best Leak Detector category. He built the Arduino NANO based solution after his own flat was damaged by a water leak.<\/p>\n<p>The three other special award categories went to:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Innovator:<\/strong> robmarkcole\u2019s smart home approach to leak detection<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simplest Solution:<\/strong>\u00a0Beata\u2019s MySafeHome\u00a0idea<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overall performer:<\/strong> Canadian electrical designer\u00a0Jade7272 whose entry, as well as addressing water leakage also included a DIY Open Source Security system and simple Heating Control sketch<\/p>\n<p>Maarten Ectors, Chief Digital Officer \u2013 GI, Legal &amp; General commented: \u201cWe are delighted with the quality and quantity of submissions from the LeakKiller Challenge. DesignSpark brought together some of the best IoT innovators to propose inexpensive solutions to avoid escape of water claims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mike Bray, Vice President of DesignSpark \u2013 RS Components: \u201cThe response to the LeakKiller Challenge demonstrated that through community engagement innovative solutions can be found to real-world problems.
