{"id":5566,"date":"2018-03-15T09:10:23","date_gmt":"2018-03-15T09:10:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=5566"},"modified":"2018-03-15T09:10:23","modified_gmt":"2018-03-15T09:10:23","slug":"adhesion-and-grip-key-to-the-perfect-climbing-technique","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/adhesion-and-grip-key-to-the-perfect-climbing-technique\/","title":{"rendered":"Adhesion and grip key to the perfect climbing technique"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers investigating how tree frogs climb have discovered that a unique combination of adhesion and grip gives them perfect technique.<\/p>\n<p>The new research, led by the <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.glasgow.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Glasgow<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and published in the <em>Journal of Experimental Biology<\/em>, could have implications for areas of science such as robotics, as well as the production of climbing equipment and even tyre manufacture.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nResearchers found that, using their fluid-filled adhesive toe pads, tree frogs are able to grip to surfaces to climb.<\/p>\n<p>When surfaces aren\u2019t smooth enough to allow adhesion, researchers found that the frogs relied on their long limbs to grip around objects.<\/p>\n<span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/silicon-breakthrough-could-lead-to-high-performance-bendable-electronics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Glasgow<\/a><\/span> scientists Iain Hill and Jon Barnes gave the tree frogs a series of narrow and wide cylinders to climb.<\/p>\n<p>The research team found that on the narrow cylinders the frogs used their grip and adhesion pads, allowing them to climb the obstacle at speed. Wider cylinders were too large for the frogs to grip, so they could only climb more slowly using their suction adhesive pads.<\/p>\n<p>When the cylinders were coated in sandpaper, preventing adhesion, the frogs could only climb the narrow ones slowly, using their grip.<\/p>\n<p>They were not able to climb the wider cylinders covered in sandpaper as they couldn\u2019t use their grip or adhesion<\/p>\n<p>Dr Barnes said: \u201cI have worked on tree frog research for many years and I find them fascinating. Work on tree frogs has been of interest to industry and other areas of science in the past, since their climbing abilities can offer us insights into the most efficient way to climb and stick to surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClimbing robots, for instance, need ways to stick, they could be based either on gecko climbing or tree frog climbing.\u00a0 This research demonstrates how a good climbing robot would need to combine gripping and adhesion to climb more efficiently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study, <em>The biomechanics of tree frogs climbing curved surfaces: a gripping problem<\/em> is published in the J<em>ournal of Experimental Biology<\/em>.
