{"id":5697,"date":"2018-03-19T08:18:40","date_gmt":"2018-03-19T08:18:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=5697"},"modified":"2018-03-19T08:18:40","modified_gmt":"2018-03-19T08:18:40","slug":"one-in-four-engineering-professionals-risk-job-opportunities-through-social-media-activity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/one-in-four-engineering-professionals-risk-job-opportunities-through-social-media-activity\/","title":{"rendered":"One in four engineering professionals risk job opportunities through social media activity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One third (30.8%) of recruiters admit to \u2018stalking\u2019 potential candidates on social media, putting pressure on workers to be savvy about what they post online.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, 24.4% of engineering professionals don\u2019t set their social media profiles private.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s according to the latest data from <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cv-library.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CV-Library<\/a><\/span>, the UK independent job site.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nThe study of 1,100 UK workers and over 200 recruitment professionals explored attitudes towards social media and the effect it has on your employability.<\/p>\n<p>The survey found that over half (58.5%) of candidates in the engineering sector expect to be \u2018Googled\u2019 by potential employers and recruiters, with 81.3% stating that they are more careful about what they post online.<\/p>\n<p>Other key findings include:<\/p>\n<p>* Three quarters (78%) of professionals in the industry believe that recruiters would judge them based on what they post on their social media profiles<\/p>\n<p>* What\u2019s more, over two thirds (69.3%) of recruiters confirmed that they are influenced by what they find online<\/p>\n<p>And despite many engineering professionals already being cautious, 68.3% said they are more careful about what they share when they\u2019re actively job hunting<\/p>\n<p>Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/79-7-of-engineers-say-work-has-a-negative-impact-on-their-self-esteem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CV-Library<\/a><\/span>, comments: \u201cMany employers and recruiters will use social media during their hiring process and it\u2019s clear that they are influenced by what they see online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you use social media, it\u2019s vital that you are aware of what you\u2019re sharing and that you understand the implications of posting inappropriate or potentially damaging content.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen in doubt, switch your profile to full-private mode to cover your back!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the survey sought to find out how both sides felt about posting photos online.<\/p>\n<p>Two thirds (61.2%) of recruiters said that they believe selfies are not acceptable for use on professional profiles.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, 53.7% of engineering professionals also agreed that these types of photos look unprofessional.<\/p>\n<p>Biggins concludes: \u201cThe selfie craze has taken off in recent years, but it\u2019s clear that recruiters don\u2019t appreciate these being used for professional purposes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile you might not think your pictures are incriminating in any way, there are certain negative connotations that come with \u2018selfies\u2019 that could cost you a job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead, be sure to use a photo that is as professional as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With more recruiters now using social media to screen candidates, <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/more-than-a-third-of-engineers-do-not-know-how-to-write-a-stand-out-cv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CV-Library<\/a><\/span> shares its top tips for being careful online.<\/p>\n<p>1. \u2018Google\u2019 yourself: Get ahead of recruiters and search your own name online. Look at what you find and decide if there\u2019s anything you don\u2019t wish potential employers to see.<\/p>\n<p>2. Set your profiles to private: The easiest way to ensure that recruiters aren\u2019t sifting through your photos or updates is by setting your profiles to private. This way they can only see your content if they ask to connect with you.<\/p>\n<p>3. Remove anything inappropriate: Take some time to go through your profiles and remove anything that might be deemed as inappropriate. It might take a little while, but it can be very beneficial to your job search.<\/p>\n<p>4. Don\u2019t use \u2018selfies\u2019: If you\u2019re using job boards, professional networking sites, or you\u2019ve even created an online portfolio \u2013 keep your profile photo professional.
