The code may be printed directly onto the product or packaging and enables accurate recording and product verification at every stage to aid compliance with regulations or industry best practice.<\/p>\n<p>To find out, <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mt.com\/pce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mettler Toledo PCE<\/a><\/span> surveyed \u00adEuropean and North American companies over the course of several months.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nTheir responses provide a fascinating insight into the current state-of-play across different industry sectors and indicate the value that companies put on serialisation when it comes to fighting \u00adproduct and brand piracy.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the survey outcomes, Reinhold van Ackeren of Mettler Toledo PCE says: \u201cFrom our research, one thing is quite clear: serialisation of products will grow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some cases, such as the food sector, it has already become a significant area for investment outside of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry where it originated.<\/p>\n<p>Not only does serialisation help to protect against counterfeit products entering the market, but it can also secure against grey market sales and help identify breakdowns in the supply chain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Setting the stage for serialisation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the World Customers Organization (WCO), counterfeits make up a total of around 7% of world trade.<\/p>\n<p>The economic damage caused by this for both manufacturers and brand owners amounts to hundreds of billions (EUR) each year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015 alone, counterfeits in the global \u00adsmartphone market resulted in lost \u00adsales of around 45 billion EUR.<\/p>\n<p>\u00adWhile serialisation solutions cannot stop \u00ad\u00adcounterfeiting, they are a powerful weapon in the fight against product and brand piracy \u2013 as the results of the <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/labelling-and-verification-system\/\">Mettler Toledo PCE<\/a><\/span> Track &amp; Trace Survey make clear.<\/p>\n<p>Key takeaways from the \u00adsurvey results are:<\/p>\n<p>* A majority of the companies surveyed anticipate new serialisation requirements. A third of those surveyed would welcome legal requirements on serialisation for their own industry.<\/p>\n<p>* Large retailers could become key market drivers \u00adfor serialisation solutions through \u00adrequirements for their suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>* Companies consider the most important advantages of serialisation to be protection against brand and product piracy and greater transparency in the logistics chain.<\/p>\n<p>* A majority of those surveyed admitted that they or their industry were already affected by counterfeiting; a quarter of these respondents even reported massive disruptions.<\/p>\n<p>* There is a need for information as to what opportunities serialisation offers in the fight against counterfeits and unauthorised sales channels, as well as to what the limits of these solutions are.<\/p>\n<p>* When implementing serialisation, companies consider the total package, including hardware, software, and service. Flexibility and ease-of-use in software \u00ad\u00ad\u00adare particularly important to them.<\/p>\n<p>* Experience in serialisation projects \u00adthat have already been implemented is a top priority \u00adwhen selecting a project partner.<\/p>\n<p>* The IT infrastructure required to manage serialisation data in the medium and long-term \u00adis\u00ad frequently underestimated.<\/p>\n<p>* More information is needed on how end-to-end verification can be implemented at the product level with partners across the supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>* High implementation costs make it difficult to \u00adintroduce serialisation solutions for \u00adproducts with a low price \u00adpoint.<\/p>\n<p>The results of the survey are available now to download <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mt.com\/pce-Track-and-Trace-Study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What potential do manufacturers see in serialisation as a tool to protect against counterfeiting?
