{"id":6529,"date":"2018-04-16T10:00:36","date_gmt":"2018-04-16T09:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=6529"},"modified":"2018-04-16T08:21:49","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T07:21:49","slug":"workers-reveal-the-bizarre-rules-uk-bosses-have-enforced-on-their-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/workers-reveal-the-bizarre-rules-uk-bosses-have-enforced-on-their-staff\/","title":{"rendered":"Workers reveal bizarre rules UK bosses have enforced on staff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some say rules are made to be broken and according to research from the UK\u2019s leading independent job board, <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cv-library.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CV-Library<\/a><\/span>, half (51.6%) of engineering professionals have worked for a company that implemented strange or ridiculous rules.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, almost half (46.9%) confessed that they weren\u2019t happy about having to abide by these.<\/p>\n<p>The survey of 1,200 professionals looked into the most ridiculous rules that UK bosses were enforcing on their staff and how employees felt about these.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nEngineering professionals were asked to share the craziest rules that their boss had in place, these included:<\/p>\n<p>* Pay docked for being a few minutes late \u2013 53.1%<br \/>\n* No food or drink at your desk \u2013 34.4%<br \/>\n* Time limits when using the bathroom \u2013 31.3%<br \/>\n* Not allowed to have a beard \u2013 21.9%<br \/>\n* Getting a doctor\u2019s note for any kind of illness \u2013 18.8%<br \/>\n* Standing when the boss enters the room \u2013 15.6%<br \/>\n* Leaving all personal belongings at the door \u2013 12.5%<br \/>\n* No drinking tea while working \u2013 9.5%<br \/>\n* No pictures, plants or anything personal on your desk \u2013 9.4%<br \/>\n* No talking to colleagues unless in the break room \u2013 9.3%<br \/>\nLee Biggins, founder and managing director of<\/p>\n<span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/engineering-jobs-vacancies-rise-by-3-9-as-the-labour-market-strengthens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CV-Library<\/a><\/span> comments on the findings: \u201cEvery employer knows that the workplace needs some rules and regulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat said, you don\u2019t want to make employees feel uncomfortable or untrusted by enforcing outrageous and unnecessary rules upon them. This could result in them leaving to find a more welcoming work culture elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it\u2019s important that you get the balance right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake sure you lead by example and always follow the rules yourself. Alongside this, remember to treat staff as you\u2019d wish to be treated. This means that if there are any rules that you personally wouldn\u2019t want to abide by, it might be time to revaluate these.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ridiculous and strange rules<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The survey also asked employees how they felt about these rules. It was revealed that two thirds (60.7%) of engineering workers believe that bosses don\u2019t have the right to enforce ridiculous and strange rules on their staff.<\/p>\n<p>Biggins continues: \u201cIt\u2019s concerning to see that employers are enforcing ridiculous rules despite many believing that they don\u2019t have the right to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo avoid any conflicts you need to ensure that your company rules aren\u2019t discriminatory or disrespectful towards employees in any way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should think about running the rules by your HR department for a second opinion \u2013 this may flag up anything you missed.
