{"id":7284,"date":"2018-05-15T09:43:22","date_gmt":"2018-05-15T08:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=7284"},"modified":"2018-05-15T09:43:22","modified_gmt":"2018-05-15T08:43:22","slug":"7284-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/7284-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Majority of engineering professionals falling victim to the \u2018always-on\u2019 work culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A staggering 51.2% of professionals in the engineering sector confess to replying to work-related emails, or making work-related calls in their free time.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, one in three (30.6%) admit that they check their phone for work purposes immediately before they go to sleep, and as soon as they wake up.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nThat\u2019s according to the latest survey from <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cv-library.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CV-Library<\/a><\/span>, the UK independent job site.<\/p>\n<p>The survey of 1,200 UK workers explored the impact of today\u2019s \u2018always on\u2019 culture, revealing that 87.7% of engineering workers believe that this is having a negative effect on professionals.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents were also asked to share how working outside of their contracted hours has affected their life. The top problems to emerge include:<\/p>\n<p>* Spending less time with family \u2013 63.6%<br \/>\n* Poor quality of sleep \u2013 51.1%<br \/>\n* Feeling exhausted \u2013 50%<br \/>\n* Personal relationships suffering \u2013 45.5%<br \/>\n* Increased stress levels \u2013 36.4%<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, 42.5% have access to shared drives and workspaces, with 48.4% saying that they access these outside of working hours. This has lead 68.1% to agree that mobile devices are blurring the lines between our personal and our work lives.<\/p>\n<p>Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/engineering-salaries-rise-as-competition-for-the-top-candidates-remains-fierce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CV-Library<\/a><\/span>, comments:\u201cIt\u2019s concerning to learn that such a large percentage of professionals in the engineering sector are continuing to work outside of their contracted hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile technology has opened us up to a world of opportunities, it also makes it all too easy to access emails and shared drives from home. If you\u2019re guilty of putting in the extra hours, it could be time to take a step back and reflect on how this is impacting your life, so you can begin to make some positive changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With 60.3% of engineering workers confessing that they think about work outside of office hours, it\u2019s unsurprising that almost one in four (21.9%) professionals don\u2019t consider themselves to have a good work-life balance.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, 52.1% revealed that they have left a job in the past due to poor work-life balance.<\/p>\n<p>Biggins concludes:\u201cIt\u2019s worrying to see that over half of engineering professionals have left a previous job due to lack of work-life balance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking some time out to re-charge and enjoy your private life is vital. Being overworked can have a number of negative effects on your wellbeing, so it\u2019s important that you find a company with a good culture, which encourages work-life balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Achieving a strong work-life balance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below, <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/revealed-five-reasons-why-engineering-professionals-lie-to-secure-a-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CV-Library<\/a><\/span> reveals its top tips for achieving a strong work-life balance:<\/p>\n<p>Avoid the tech &#8211; Disable your work emails from your phone or tablet, and avoid logging in to shared work areas during your free time. You can\u2019t be expected to be online 24\/7.<\/p>\n<p>2. Manage your time &#8211; Make better use of your time when you\u2019re in the office and ensure you\u2019re keeping on top of your workload. This will stop you worrying about work when you leave.<\/p>\n<p>3. Set yourself up for the next day &#8211; At the end of each day, write yourself a to-do list for when you return. This can help you to switch off knowing that no tasks will fall under the radar.<\/p>\n<p>4. Ask for help &#8211; Sometimes work gets busy. So if you\u2019re struggling, you need to speak to your manager or delegate to your team. You can\u2019t be expected to pick up all the slack.<\/p>\n<p>5.
