{"id":7973,"date":"2018-06-15T08:00:42","date_gmt":"2018-06-15T07:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=7973"},"modified":"2018-06-14T10:51:03","modified_gmt":"2018-06-14T09:51:03","slug":"multi-protocol-modem-offers-single-design-to-address-smart-metering-markets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/multi-protocol-modem-offers-single-design-to-address-smart-metering-markets\/","title":{"rendered":"Multi-protocol modem offers single design to address smart metering markets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microchip announces a <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.microchip.com\/PL360B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flexible PLC modem<\/a><\/span>\u00a0which supports multiple standard and proprietary protocols used globally in smart grid infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The PL360B enables manufacturers to respond to the utilities\u2019 need to improve the reliability and performance of smart meters and to address multiple markets, end-customer regulations and operational requirements.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nThe single device can be adapted simply with firmware, significantly reducing development costs and time to market.<\/p>\n<p>Designed to support PLC protocols in the frequency band up to 500 kHz, such as ITU G.9903 (G3-PLC) and ITU G.9904 (PRIME), as well as CENELEC, FCC and ARIB compliant applications, the PL360B is the latest device in <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/rs-components-introduces-debugger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microchip<\/a><\/span>\u2019s portfolio of smart energy products.<\/p>\n<p>The PL360B modem comes with reference designs for adding a PLC interface to any end-customer application requiring connectivity, including smart meters, lighting, home automation, building automation and remote control.<\/p>\n<p>Additional benefits of using a PL360B modem is its efficient use of power, offering up to a 25 percent improvement in power consumption over previous generations, and a Class D amplification scheme that optimises the modem transmission efficiency further.<\/p>\n<p>The ATPL360 evaluation kit includes two evaluation boards to establish point-to-point communication.<\/p>\n<p>The kit includes PC tools designed to evaluate the performance of the PL360B, including a PHY tester for point-to-point test, PLC \u2018sniffer\u2019 to capture PLC traffic in a deployed network and a PLC manager to manage the resulting network.
