{"id":8249,"date":"2018-06-28T08:00:40","date_gmt":"2018-06-28T07:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=8249"},"modified":"2018-06-27T10:40:05","modified_gmt":"2018-06-27T09:40:05","slug":"direct-sensor-fpga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/direct-sensor-fpga\/","title":{"rendered":"Direct sensor-FPGA communication slashes latency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RS Components (RS) has announced availability of the <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.rs-online.com\/web\/p\/interface-development-kits\/1741555\/?sra=pstk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digilent Pcam 5C fixed-focus colour imaging module<\/a><\/span>, designed for use with FPGA development boards.<\/p>\n<p>The Pcam 5C represents a reliable, keenly priced peripheral for electronics design engineers building devices with embedded camera applications.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nThe Pcam 5C is built around the 5-megapixel Omnivision OV5640 image sensor, which offers a number of internal processing functions to improve image quality.<\/p>\n<p>These include automatic white balance, automatic black level calibration, and controls to adjust saturation, hue, gamma and sharpness.<\/p>\n<p>The Pcam 5C comes with a fixed-focus lens fitted to a standard M12 lens mount to allow interchanging.<\/p>\n<p>It is implemented on a small (4.0 x 2.5 cm) PCB with a 1&#215;7 straight header to allow access to auxiliary camera signals.<\/p>\n<p>Output formats include RAW10, RGB565, CCIR656, YUV422\/420 and YCbCr422.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8251\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8251\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/RS770-Digilent_Pcam_5C-2_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8251\" src=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/RS770-Digilent_Pcam_5C-2_.png\" alt=\"Direct sensor-FPGA communication slashes latency\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/RS770-Digilent_Pcam_5C-2_.png 500w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/RS770-Digilent_Pcam_5C-2_-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/RS770-Digilent_Pcam_5C-2_-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/RS770-Digilent_Pcam_5C-2_-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Pcam 5C is built around the 5-megapixel Omnivision OV5640 image sensor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Data transfer between the image sensor and its host development board is via a dual-lane MIPI CSI-2 interface, providing sufficient bandwidth to support frequently used streaming video formats including 1080p (full HD) at 30 frames per second and 720p (standard HD) at 60 frames per second.<\/p>\n<p>The physical connection is a 15-pin flat flexible cable (FFC) that is pin compatible with the familiar Raspberry Pi camera connector; a 10 cm FFC is supplied with the Pcam 5C.<\/p>\n<p>Educational design tool specialist Digilent designed the Pcam 5C for use, in particular, with its Zybo Z7 ARM\/FPGA development board, and both are to be made available as an \u2018embedded vision bundle\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Zybo Z7 features a dual-core ARM Cortex-9 processor integrated with Xilinx Zynq-7000 FPGA logic on a single SoC.<\/p>\n<p>The Z7\u2019s onboard Pcam connector allows direct communication between the image sensor and the FPGA, delivering much lower latency than HDMI or USB alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>Because it is expensive to license, or complex and time consuming to develop a MIPI CSI-2 controller implementation for FPGA, Digilent provides its own set of Vivado IP cores that work with the Pcam 5C on Xilinx FPGA and Zynq host boards.
