{"id":8427,"date":"2018-07-10T03:00:38","date_gmt":"2018-07-10T02:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=8427"},"modified":"2018-07-09T09:20:29","modified_gmt":"2018-07-09T08:20:29","slug":"stem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/stem\/","title":{"rendered":"Steely STEM support to schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Encouraging children to study <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/how-stem-industries-can-attract-more-females\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)<\/a><\/span> is something that <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrettsteel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barrett Steel Ltd<\/a><\/span>\u00a0feels strongly about.<\/p>\n<p>Following an approach from a secondary school asking for steel to use in lessons, Barrett Steel were asked to get involved and are keen to support the education of young people nationwide, where they can.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>Donating excess product to help with the education of the future engineers seemed like an excellent idea, and a way in which this long-established family company could have a positive impact on their local communities.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Jason Brister, Head of Art, Design and Technology at Sir John Nelthorpe School in Brigg, North Lincolnshire, was the one to first make the approach: \u201cStarting in September 2018 we are introducing a new Engineering course for our GCSE students and I reached out to local companies that may be able to support our faculty with charitable donations of steel, copper, brass or aluminium offcuts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barrett Steel\u2019s depot in Scunthorpe, Kass Steel Stockholders were put in touch and invited school staff to visit and examine some suitable pieces for their project needs.<br \/>\n\u201cWe were delighted to be put in touch with Kass,\u201d continues Mr Brister, \u201cand are confident that their input will have a positive impact on our students\u2019 learning. We have fought for two years for Engineering to be included in the curriculum, so this support is invaluable to help our engineers of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tom Barrett, Commerical Director of Barrett Steel, said: \u201cSTEM subjects are the core of our business and our customers.
