{"id":8734,"date":"2018-08-03T09:28:01","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T08:28:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=8734"},"modified":"2018-08-03T09:30:50","modified_gmt":"2018-08-03T08:30:50","slug":"gender-equality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/gender-equality\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender equality: A quarter of employees say they\u2019re made to follow gender specific rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gender equality has been a hot topic of late, particularly when it comes to the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, according to the latest data from\u00a0<span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cv-library.co.uk\/?utm_source=press%20release&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=press-release&amp;utm_content=gender-diversity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CV-Library<\/a><\/span>, the UK independent job site, a quarter (25%) of engineering professionals have to adhere to gender specific rules at work, despite half (49.2%) agreeing that these rules are sexist.<\/p>\n<p>The study of 1,100 professionals explored gender specific rules in UK workplaces.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nRespondents were asked to reveal all gender specific rules that were enforced in their place of work.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, it was found that the majority of these rules were aimed at the appearance of male employees.<\/p>\n<p>The most common gender specific rules in the engineering industry include:<\/p>\n<p>* Men not being allowed to wear shorts (86.7%)<br \/>\n* Men not being allowed to wear jewellery (43.3%)<br \/>\n* Men having to wear a tie (16.7%)<br \/>\n* Women having to wear skirts or dresses of a certain length (7%)<br \/>\n* Women not being allowed to wear tights (or thickness of them monitored) (6.7%)<\/p>\n<p>Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/engineering-graduates\/\">CV-Library<\/a><\/span>, comments on the findings: \u201cWhile there\u2019s been a flood of media stories around equality in the workplace, especially in terms of the gender pay gap, it\u2019s important that all forms of sexism are challenged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe often hear about women being judged on their appearance at the hiring stage, but our data suggests that male employees are more likely to face these problems in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmployers in the engineering should make sure that any rules they enforce are fair and justified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbove all, they need to remember that rules should apply to all employees. Plus, while dress codes are understandable, they should also be flexible. Especially considering the spate of hot weather we\u2019ve been having recently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrict work attire such as ties and heavy suits can be uncomfortable and too warm, causing dips in productivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study also asked engineering professionals about diversity in their workplace, revealing that one in four (21.7%) don\u2019t consider their workplace to be diverse.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, gender equality at work is important to the majority of professionals (91.9%), with 61.5% revealing that they take this into consideration when job hunting.<\/p>\n<p>Biggins continues: \u201cIt\u2019s worrying to learn that so many engineering professionals are working in environments that they don\u2019t consider to be diverse. Diversity in the workplace has a number of benefits for both employers and their staff and can promote an inclusive and positive workplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good to see that diversity is important to engineering professionals and that they\u2019re thinking about issues such as gender equality when job hunting.
