{"id":8909,"date":"2018-08-17T10:28:42","date_gmt":"2018-08-17T09:28:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=8909"},"modified":"2018-08-21T11:16:06","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T10:16:06","slug":"political-uncertainty-and-rising-costs-are-biggest-threats-to-it-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/political-uncertainty-and-rising-costs-are-biggest-threats-to-it-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Political uncertainty and rising costs are biggest threats to IT industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Political uncertainty and the challenges posed by rising costs are considered the biggest threats to the IT industry.<\/p>\n<p>This was revealed within the results of <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upspower.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uninterruptible Power Supplies Limite<\/a>d<\/span>\u2019s (UPSL) latest industry survey, which questioned more than 800 senior IT and data centre professionals across the UK and Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 edition of the poll revealed that over 35% believe political uncertainty is the biggest threat to their business over the coming 12 months.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><br \/>\nThis was closely followed by rising costs (including energy costs), which received almost 32% of the vote. Increasing regulatory burden garnered nearly 13% for third place, with increased competition from new and existing competitors completing the top five responses.<\/p>\n<p>UPSL \u00a0sales and marketing director, Tim Wilkes, commented on the results: \u201cWe conduct the survey every two years and it is always interesting to see the impact time has on the responses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen comparing the latest results to those from 2016, it is clear there\u2019s been a significant shift in attitudes. Political uncertainty didn\u2019t register as a top ten response back then but that was before the Brexit vote and the impact that it\u2019s had on the value of the pound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat rising costs is a close second is less surprising. In 2016, rising energy costs was the top response for over 77% of respondents, so it says a lot about how the UK\u2019s IT and data centre business landscape has shifted in just two years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It could be argued that the latest results reflect the perceived lack of clarity over Brexit, combined with the threat of increased US protectionism and a range of other global geopolitical factors facing the industry right now.<\/p>\n<p>Those concerns were supported by another question from the survey, which posed: \u201cWhat impact do you think Brexit will have on your business?\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>More than 60% of those questioned felt that Brexit will have a negative impact on their business, with 50.75% fearing it will have \u2018a small negative impact\u2019 and 13.40% who worried it would have \u2018a large negative impact\u2019.
