{"id":9417,"date":"2018-10-15T11:18:12","date_gmt":"2018-10-15T10:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/?p=9417"},"modified":"2018-10-15T11:18:12","modified_gmt":"2018-10-15T10:18:12","slug":"job-hunting-myths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.engineernewsnetwork.com\/blog\/job-hunting-myths\/","title":{"rendered":"Revealed: 10 job hunting myths that could hold engineers back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the latest research from leading independent job board,\u00a0CV-Library, while almost half (47.6%) of engineers believe there are set <span class=\"highlight highlight-blue\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cv-library.co.uk\/?utm_source=referral&amp;utm_medium=press release&amp;utm_campaign=press-release&amp;utm_content=UK's-biggest-job-hunting-myths_october\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rules you should<\/a><\/span> follow when job hunting, the majority (86.7%) say that no one has ever taught them what these rules are.<\/p>\n<p>The survey of 1,100 UK professionals found that over a quarter (25.4%) of engineers admit to feeling confused about the job hunting process, with 68.8% stating that they were never taught how or where to look for a job.<br \/>\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7565662001938327\" data-ad-slot=\"7585079586\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>As a result, the survey sought to find out what \u2018myths\u2019 engineering professionals believe to be true when searching and applying for jobs, revealing the following 10 factors:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. You can\u2019t get a job without relevant experience \u2013 63.3%<\/strong><br \/>\nFalse\u00a0\u2013 So long as you can demonstrate that you have the right attitude and transferable skills for the job, you don\u2019t necessarily need to have engineering industry experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. You should apply to as many jobs as possible\u201356.7%<\/strong><br \/>\nTrue and False \u2013 While you should aim to broaden your horizons and apply for the jobs that interest you, try to focus on quality over quantity to get the most out of your job search.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. You should arrive 30 minutes early to an interview \u2013\u00a045%<\/strong><br \/>\nFalse\u00a0\u2013 Arriving too early to an interview is a big no-no and may annoy your potential employer. Instead, aim to arrive around 5-10 minutes before it\u2019s due to start.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. The most skilled candidate will get the job \u2013\u00a035%<\/strong><br \/>\nTrue and False\u00a0\u2013 Employers want the best cultural fit for their organisation, sometimes that\u2019s the most skilled candidate, sometimes it\u2019s about potential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.\u00a0Your CV needs a unique design to stand out \u2013\u00a033.3%<\/strong><br \/>\nFalse\u00a0\u2013 A unique design could help you to stand out, but equally, be off putting! It\u2019s better to stick with a clear layout that\u2019s easy to read, using a traditional font such as Arial or Calibri.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Your CV should only be one page long \u2013\u00a016.7%<\/strong><br \/>\nFalse\u00a0\u2013 Limiting your CV to one page won\u2019t leave enough room to include all the relevant information. That said you should aim to avoid anything longer than two pages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7. You can&#8217;t change industries &#8211;\u00a015%<\/strong><br \/>\nFalse\u00a0\u2013 Your previous jobs will give you a transferrable skill set, which you can utilise in your next venture. So if you want to move industries \u2013 go for it!<\/p>\n<p><strong>8. You shouldn\u2019t negotiate on an entry level position \u2013\u00a011.7%<\/strong><br \/>\nTrue and False\u00a0\u2013 While entry-level candidates should be more careful when negotiating an offer, it doesn\u2019t mean it should be ruled out \u2013 particularly if you feel it doesn\u2019t match your value.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. The internet is the only place to find a job \u2013\u00a011.7%<\/strong><br \/>\nTrue and False\u00a0\u2013 While most people start their job search online, you can also find a job through networking or at events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. You can\u2019t get a job without a degree \u2013\u00a06.7%<\/strong><br \/>\nFalse\u00a0\u2013 Nowadays, there\u2019s plenty of options for individuals that don\u2019t want to do a degree.
