Enclosures withstand the rigours of coastal applications

For outdoor applications there are numerous challenges to be considered, when the outdoor applications are located on the coast these challenges can be amplified

Electrical designers and installers are responsible for ensuring that their installations are safe, reliable and protected.

More often than not it is the job of the electrical enclosure to perform these functions.

For outdoor applications there are numerous challenges to be considered, when the outdoor applications are located on the coast these challenges can be amplified.

Fortunately, Spelsberg’s GEOS range of rugged enclosures has the answer.

The coastlines of Great Britain and Ireland are world renowned for their beauty. They are also an important part of our economy, thanks to ports, fishing harbours and the oil and gas industry.

For electrical installations in such facilities there are multiple hazards that need to be protected against to ensure safe and reliable operation.

In addition to weather patterns, the salty sea air creates a particularly harsh environment meaning that rust and corrosion is an ever-present danger. There is also frequently heavy machinery and round-the-clock operations, meaning that connections need to be protected against accidental damage.

With these application specific challenges in mind – along with the usual issues attributed to outdoor applications such as UV exposure and water ingress – it’s important that engineers and installers pay particular attention to material specification.

For coastal applications plastic-based enclosures and fixings are always preferable to metal where regulations allow.

Generally, polycarbonate enclosures offer the best combination of protection against impacts, UV and corrosion while remaining cost competitive and easy to work with.

Recognizing the necessity for rugged outdoor enclosures that perform in the most testing of environments, Spelsberg has launched the GEOS range.

The lightweight polycarbonate design is easy to install and delivers an impact rating of IK09. The range is available as both IP66 or IP67 depending on the requirements of the application.

All enclosures benefit from the innovative Drain Protect channels which move moisture away from the access point to improve ingress protection and facilitate potential maintenance requirements.

The standard range includes ten separate models available, which can all be specified in a wide selection of additional sizes or side wall measurements. This allows end users to specify a GEOS that can match pre-existing space constraints, meaning that the GEOS can be easily installed and integrated to preserve space efficiency at a facility. For applications that require regular inspection, transparent lids can be specified on all models.

Safe, reliable and protected – these are three requirements for any electrical installation. The GEOS range offers electrical designers and installers the peace of mind for even the harshest of environments.
