Energy-intense industries need to rethink their energy models to avoid grid resilience cliff edge

Energy-intensive industries are facing a major challenge: how to secure enough power in a time of increasing grid instability and energy insecurity. A new report from Aggreko finds that these industries need to rethink their energy models and adopt a more decentralised approach in order to improve their resilience.

The report, titled Race to Resilience, argues that the current centralised energy system is not sustainable for energy-intensive industries. This is because the system is vulnerable to disruptions, such as power outages and cyberattacks. Additionally, the system is not equipped to handle the increasing demand for renewable energy.

The report proposes a number of solutions for energy-intensive industries to improve their resilience. These solutions include:

Adopting microgrids: Microgrids are small, self-contained power systems that can operate independently of the main grid. This makes them more resilient to disruptions.

Investing in energy storage: Energy storage can help to smooth out fluctuations in energy supply and demand. This can help to reduce the reliance on the main grid.

Using combined heat and power (CHP): CHP systems generate both heat and power from a single fuel source. This can help to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

The report concludes by calling on energy-intensive industries to take action to improve their resilience. The authors argue that these industries need to start planning for the future now, in order to avoid being caught off guard by future disruptions.
