India set to witness significant polyethylene capacity additions through 2030

India is poised to significantly expand polyethylene production capacity to reduce heavy import dependence, achieve self-sufficiency, and meet surging domestic demand driven by rapid industrialization, urbanization, and infrastructure growth. Accounting for over 14% of the expected global capacity additions by 2030, the country is set to be the world’s second-largest contributor to polyethylene capacity additions through 2030 only after China, according to GlobalData.

GlobalData’s latest report, Polyethylene Industry Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants to 2030, shows that India is likely to witness polyethylene capacity additions from 13 upcoming projects by 2030.

Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “India’s polyethylene market is expanding rapidly, with consumption fuelled by key end-use sectors like packaging, construction, consumer goods, and automotive parts. Rising demand for flexible and rigid packaging, coupled with increased use of polyethylene in pipes, films, containers, and industrial applications, is strengthening the need for domestic capacity expansion.”

The highest polyethylene capacity addition in India is expected to come from the planned project, the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Bina Polyethylene Plant (Swing) in the Madhya Pradesh state. The project is currently under construction and is slated to commence operations in 2028. Bharat Petroleum is the designated operator of this project and holds entire equity stake.

Bharat Petroleum plans one more noteworthy project in Maharashtra, the “Bharat Petroleum Corporation Rasayani Polyethylene Plant 2.” It is expected to start polyethylene production in 2030.

In addition, Haldia Petrochemicals’ Cuddalore Polyethylene Plant 1 and  Plant 2 represent the next-largest capacity additions in the country. Both are being planned in the Tamil Nadu state and expected to come onstream in 2030. Haldia Petrochemicals is the designated operator of these two projects.

Roy concludes: “India’s upcoming polyethylene projects highlight the country’s strategic push to strengthen its petrochemicals value chain and improve supply security for key industrial sectors. With multiple large-scale plants scheduled to come online by 2030, India is well positioned to narrow its import gap, support rising domestic consumption, and emerge as one of the most important growth markets in the global polyethylene industry.”
