China is set to register the highest methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) capacity additions in Asia, contributing about 80% of the region’s capacity additions by 2027, forecasts GlobalData, the data and analytics company.
GlobalData’s latest report, Methylene Diphenyl Di-isocyanate (MDI) Industry Capacity and Capital Expenditure with Details of All Active and Planned Plants, shows China leads with the largest capacity additions, with a capacity of 0.80mtpa from one planned and one announced project.
MDI is an important aromatic diisocyanate that is used to produce polyurethane (PU) foam, which is widely used in various sectors such as insulators and the automotive industry. Due to the high demand for MDI in its large-scale commercial and consumer sectors, China has become one of the largest consumers and producers in the world.
Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “In China, Xinjiang Heshan Juli Chemical Yantai Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) Plant is the planned project, with a capacity of 0.40mtpa. It is expected to commence production of MDI in 2026.”
Wanhua Chemical Fujian Company Fuzhou Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) Plant is the announced project in the country, accounting for a capacity addition of 0.40mtpa. The plant is expected to commence production of MDI by 2027.
