China to spearhead global bisphenol A capacity additions through 2028

China is likely to register the highest bisphenol A capacity additions globally by 2028, contributing about 90% of the total capacity additions from upcoming projects, according to GlobalData, the data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report, Bisphenol A Industry Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants to 2028, shows that China is likely to witness bisphenol A capacity additions of 2.14 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) during 2024 to 2028 from nine planned projects.

Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, Comments: “Bisphenol A, popularly known as BPA, is a colourless industrial chemical extensively utilised in the manufacturing of a wide range of plastics and resins. These materials are primarily employed in food packaging, kitchenware, storage containers, and other similar applications.”

In China, the highest capacity addition is expected from the “SABIC Fujian Petrochemical Zhangzhou Bisphenol A Plant” with a capacity of 0.27mtpa. It is currently under construction in the “SABIC Fujian Petrochemical Zhangzhou Complex”. The plant is anticipated to commence BPA production in 2026.

Additionally, another six plants, each with a capacity of 0.24mtpa, are likely to begin operations by 2028. Of these, two are planned in the Jiangsu province, and the rest in the Hainan, Jilin, Shandong, and Henan provinces. Five of these plants are in the construction stage, and the remaining plant, “Jiangsu Ruisheng New Material Technology Company Lianyungang Bisphenol A Plant”, is in the commissioning stage.

Two more plants that include Hengli Petrochemical New Material Dalian Bisphenol A Plant and Guangxi Huayi New Materials Qinzhou Bisphenol A Plant 2 with capacities of 0.23mtpa and 0.20mtpa, respectively, are anticipated to begin operations by 2028. Both are being constructed in Liaoning and Guangxi provinces, respectively.
