Confocal sensors enable high precision distance and thickness measurements on curved surfaces

Precision sensor manufacturer Micro-Epsilon has improved and updated its range of confocal chromatic sensors with two new innovative sensors, the confocalDT IFS2407-3 and the confocalDT IFS2404 / 90-2.

Confocal chromatic sensors help solve extremely demanding measurement tasks. The confocalDT series of confocal chromatic sensors from Micro-Epsilon utilise the latest technology and measure distance and thickness to the highest precision.

Due to their non-contact measuring principle, confocal sensors from Micro-Epsilon do not affect the target object, which enables wear-free measurements.

Measurements on curved surfaces

The new confocalDT IFS2407-3 series is characterised by a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.43, which allows the measurement object to be tilted by ± 30°.

This means the sensors are particularly well suited to measurements on curved and reflecting surfaces. 

The sensors also provide a measuring range of 3mm and a large offset distance of 28mm. 

Due to their outstanding performance features, the sensors are suitable for geometrical inspection tasks in coordinate measuring machines, delivering stable, high precision measurement on target objects such as gear wheels and external threads.

Tight installation spaces in OEM applications

The confocalDT IFS2404 / 90-2 confocal sensor measures distance, position and thickness with a measuring range of 2mm and a resolution of 0.040µm.

Due to its special design, the sensor is suitable for mounting in small installation spaces. The 90° lens enables the installation depth to be reduced.

Custom sensor versions

With the confocalDT series, Micro-Epsilon offers maximum dynamics and precision. In addition to the standard portfolio, sensors can be adapted with different mounting options, modified designs and individual cable lengths. 

Used in combination with the confocalDT controllers from Micro-Epsilon, measuring rates up to 70kHz can be achieved.
