Graphene Turns 15

New higher education and research centre, the Schaffhausen Institute of Technology (SIT), will be supporting Graphene Turns 15 — an event celebrating 15 years since the isolation of the nanomaterial. Graphene Turns 15 will be held at the Royal Society, London, on October 17th, 2019, coinciding with the launch of SIT’s forthcoming education programs in graphene and advanced materials

Graphene Turns 15 will be hosted by renowned academic journal, Nature Nanotechnology. Nobel Laureate, Professor Sir Konstantin Novoselov, who co-discovered graphene in 2004, will give a presentation at the event providing a rare insight into his work and predicting future developments in the fields of graphene research.

Considered as one of the most exciting materials in technological research, graphene forms one of SIT’s six specialist areas of study. 

While it is currently in its inception phase, the newly formed research and higher education institute will feature an array of science and technology education programs at bachelor’s, master’s and PhD levels. 

Impressed by SIT’s unique interdisciplinary concept, Novoselov has recently been appointed as chairman of the scientific advisory board at SIT, as well as assisting in the establishment of SIT’s Advanced Materials Division. 

“Graphene Turns 15 will examine the rapid progress of graphene research, from its initial isolation, right through to future applications,” explained Bertrand Meyer, provost of SIT. “Advancements in graphene are already being demonstrated in the fields of biotechnology, telecommunications and electronics, but more can be done to assist in the commercial deployment of this material. 

“Schaffhausen Institute of Technology will provide an environment for young scientists to drive the development of graphene and other advanced materials.  The institution will focus on achieving academia excellence and cutting edge scientific research for emerging technologies — particular those with future relevance and commercial applications.”

Graphene Turns 15 will also host presentations by Magdalena Skipper, editor in chief of Nature and chief editorial advisor for Nature Research, and Serguei Beloussov, CEO, founder and chairman of the board of directors for Acronis.
