North America to dominate global ammonia capacity additions by 2027

North America is set to lead the global ammonia industry capacity additions with a share of 34% by 2027, as it gains capacities from new-build and expansion projects between 2023 and 2027, says GlobalData, the data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report Ammonia Industry Installed Capacity and Capital Expenditure (CapEx) Forecast by Region and Countries including details of All Active Plants, Planned and Announced Projects, 2023-2027 reveals that the total ammonia capacity of new-build and expansion projects in North America is expected to reach 17.72 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) by 2027. 

Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “In the upcoming new-build projects category, North America is expected to see a capacity addition of 17.50 mtpa from 17 planned and announced projects, whereas from the expansion projects, it is anticipated to add a capacity of 0.22 mtpa from three planned and announced projects.”

The US is expected to see major ammonia capacity additions among the North American countries. The main capacity addition in the US would be from an announced project, Ascension Clean Energy Donaldsonville Ammonia Plant, which is expected to come online in 2027 with a capacity of 7.20mtpa.

Nivedita concludes: “Mexico and Canada are the other major contributors to ammonia capacity additions in the North American region. Mexico will contribute a capacity addition of 1.62mtpa from two planned projects, while Canada will add a capacity of 1.14mtpa from two announced projects.”
