Power supplies with dynamic boost for high starting-current loads

RS Components (RS) is stocking the latest Phoenix Contact Quint Power DIN-rail power supplies, giving easy access to the innovative features and flexibility of these space-saving PSUs.

The 4th generation of Quint Power covers power ratings up to 100W, with 24V output voltage and 1.3A, 2.5A, and 3.8A nominal current ratings.

They are the first members of the Quint Power family below 100W to feature Phoenix Contact’s dynamic boost technology, which can supply up to 200% of nominal maximum current for up to five seconds to start loads that place high short-term initial demand.

In addition, the 1.3A and 2.5A models also support static boost that allows 25% over-current at any time for five seconds, to handle short-term peaks.

Further value-added features include preventive function monitoring, which warns of critical operating states before errors occur, and configurable signalling of DC OK or selectable power thresholds that let users adapt output-parameter monitoring to suit the application.

The wide AC input range of 85V-264V, and DC range of 88V-350V, gives flexibility to power the units from various sources, such as the main AC line in any geographical market, or a DC bus, battery bank, or industrial power supply.

The Quint Power power supplies have an ambient operating-temperature range of -25°C to 70°C, allowing use in a wide variety of environments.

Their slim and flat 90mm-high design saves space inside enclosures, while efficiency of up to 93.7% prevents excessive heat and helps cut energy consumption.

The Phoenix Contact Quint Power DIN-rail power supplies are shipping now from RS in the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions.

RS Components signs up with Glenair as digital distribution partner

RS Components has signed an official contract to become a digital partner of leading high-reliability interconnect manufacturer Glenair in the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions.

Glenair specialises in military qualified, industrial and commercial products for use in harsh environments. It makes a broad range of connectors, backshells, cable assemblies and accessories at its headquarters in Glendale, California, and at facilities in the UK and Italy, using the ISO 9001 process quality management system.

RS has been trading with Glenair for many years and currently stocks over 500 Glenair products, notably Micro-D and circular connectors aimed at the defence and industrial markets.

Eric Smith, Vice President of Interconnect and Emech at RS, commented: “At RS, we work closely with key manufacturers like Glenair to deliver the products engineers and contract manufacturers need, when and where they need them. This new contract strengthens the relationship between our two brands and allows RS to introduce the latest Glenair products promptly. We have new product announcements planned within the current financial year.”

Tony Birks, Managing Director of Glenair UK, said: “This new contract deepens our commitment to the outstanding digital distribution service offered by RS. Both new and existing Glenair customers will benefit from our even closer working relationship.”

Encrypted USB drives and privacy screens improve data security

RS Components (RS) has announced availability of a range of expert data security products to help companies comply with the European Union’s new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which took effect on 25th May 2018. These include products from 3M, Kingston Technology and the company’s own RS Pro range.

GDPR is designed to protect EU consumers by forcing individual businesses to ensure that personal information is managed correctly.

Compliance is compulsory for all businesses, and those found in breach can be fined up to 4% of annual global turnover or 20 million euros, whichever is greater.

The EU regulation has been incorporated into UK law to ensure its automatic continuation.

Data encryption tops the list of GDPR recommended technical measures to ensure appropriate data security.

Businesses are required to quickly communicate to customers and other contacts any data breach likely to put their personal rights at risk — but not if the data has been rendered unintelligible by encryption.

RS offers a wide range of data security products, including three from Kingston Technology, featuring 256-bit XTS-AES hardware encryption. The IronKey D300 is a series of USB 3.0 flash memory drives with capacities up to 128 Gbyte.

Each drive is secured in a zinc case with a tamper-evident epoxy seal and additional physical security measures — certified to FIPS 140-2 Level 3 — to prevent unauthorised access to the cryptographic module.

Kingston DataTraveler 2000 USB 3.0 flash drives are secured with an alphanumeric keypad giving easy-to-use PIN protection. Encryption is done on the drive and no trace of the PIN is left on the system.

The lower priced Kingston DataTraveler Vault range provides affordable business-grade security, enforcing complex password protection to prevent unauthorised access; the drive locks down and reformats after ten intrusion attempts.

For use with smartphones, the new RS Pro EviKey range of USB flash drives features easy-to-use NFC contactless technology and incorporates a standalone cybersecurity device that generates its own electrical power from the NFC antenna signal.

For security, the Evikey device must recognise the phone and the EviKey phone app must be used to unlock access using a user defined PIN.

RS offers privacy filters from 3M that prevent ‘visual hacking’ of personal or confidential information by unauthorised observers.

Available for monitors and laptop screens of various sizes, 3M privacy filters use microlouvre technology to black out side views of the screen, leaving the displayed image visible only to the person directly in front of it. The filters also protect the screen from scratching and can reduce glare and reflections.

All of these data security products from RS Pro, 3M and Kingston Technology are available to order now from RS in the EMEA region, and in Asia Pacific.
