India to lead global ethylene glycol capacity additions through 2028

India is set to register the highest ethylene glycol capacity additions globally by 2028, contributing about 25% of the total capacity additions from new plant and expansion projects, according to GlobalData, the data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report, Ethylene Glycol Industry Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants to 2028, shows that India is likely to witness ethylene glycol capacity additions of 8.69 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) from nine planned and announced projects.

Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, Comments: “The high growth of ethylene glycol market in India can be attributed to the thriving automobile, pharmaceuticals, food, and packaging industries in the country.”

In India, the major capacity additions are from an announced project, Reliance Industries Jamnagar Ethylene Glycol (EG) Plant 2, with a capacity of 4.50mtpa. Reliance Industries has a 100% stake in the plant, while Reliance O2C is the operator of the project. Located in the state of Gujarat, it is expected to commence production in 2026.

Haldia Petrochemicals Cuddalore Ethylene Glycol Plant follows next with a capacity addition of 1.20mtpa. The plant is expected to start operations in 2026. Haldia Petrochemicals has 100% equity and is also the operator of the plant that is located in the state of Tamil Nadu.
