Dual processing unit enables synchronous data acquisition from two sensors

Precision sensor supplier Micro-Epsilon has introduced the Dual Processing Unit (DPU) to its range of interface modules. The DPU, which replaces the C-Box/2A, enables synchronous data acquisition from two sensors at higher measuring rates (up to 100kHz) and can also be used for digital/analogue conversion. It is ideal for customers wishing to make their own thickness or differential measurement setup and that want certainty on the synchronisation of the measurement signals being received.

Selectable programs allow the automatic calculation of desired parameters, such as thickness, step, diameter, ovality and concentricity. Data acquisition can be synchronised by the DPU itself, by the sensor, or via an encoder, so that measured values are determined absolutely simultaneously. The DPU also offers extensive encoder settings.

Additional functionality

Compared with the C-Box/2A, the DPU offers a number of advantages. As well as a higher measuring rate of 100kHz, the DPU also offers additional functionality, including two-stage averaging (moving, recursive, median, high-pass, low-pass), two-point linearisation of the calculated value, and statistics functions such as minimum, maximum and peak-to-peak.

Data output can be digital or analogue (16-bit D/A conversion). The maximum output rate is 100kHz. The USB port is primarily used for parameterisation via the DPU’s web interface or for accessing the sensor web interface. An Ethernet (TCP/UDP) interface enables fast data transfer and communication with PLCs. Two RS422 inputs are provided for sensor and/or encoder connection. Two digital signal inputs and switching outputs plus two analogue outputs are also provided.

Two identical or two different sensors

Calculation of values can be based on two identical sensors or two different sensors, as long as their measurement signals are of the same type (distance, intensity, etc.). Connected sensors are automatically recognised via the web interface.

The DPU is backwards-compatible, which means that an existing C-Box/2A can be replaced one-for-one. Existing commands are unchanged and new commands have been added.

The number of compatible devices has been expanded. The DPU now supports the following sensors: optoNCDT: ILD1420, ILD1900, ILD2300; optoCONTROL: ODC2520; confocalDT: IFC241x, IFC242x, IFC246x.
