China to dominate global acetic acid capacity additions through 2028

China is set to dominate acetic acid capacity additions globally through 2028, contributing more than 90% of the total capacity additions from seven new build and an expansion project, according to GlobalData, the data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report, Acetic Acid Industry Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants to 2028, shows that China is likely to witness acetic acid capacity additions of 6.70 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) between 2024 and 2028.

Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, Comments: “Acetic acid, commonly referred to as ethanoic acid, is an important chemical reagent that finds wide applications across multiple industries such as textiles, plastics, and pharmaceuticals. The rapid expansion of these sectors in China is driving the demand for acetic acid in the country.”

In China, the highest capacity addition is from “Guangdong Shengyuanda Technology Jieyang Acetic Acid Plant”, with a capacity of 1.50 mtpa. The plant is currently under construction, and it is expected to commence production in 2026. Guangdong Shengyuanda Technology Co Ltd owns 100% of the stake in the plant and is also the operator of the project.

Zhejiang Petrochemical Ineos Jv Daishan Acetic Acid Plant and ShengHong Holding Group Lianyungang Acetic Acid Plant follow next, with a capacity of 1.0 mtpa each. They are expected to start operations in 2026 and 2028, respectively.
