Engineering professionals reveal what their ideal job looks like

If you could piece together your ideal job, what would it look like?

Well, according to a new study from the UK independent job board, CV-Library, engineers are after a flexible Manchester-based job, in a company with less than 250 people, which pays £35,500 per year!

The survey of 1,200 workers, which sought to find out exactly what the average person wants when it comes to pay, benefits, working patterns and more, reveals that engineers are after the following from their job:

* Four in 10 (42.3%) want a salary of £35,500, while 30.5% want a salary of £25,500 per year
* The majority (57.6%) would prefer to work flexi-time, choosing their eight hours between 06:00 and 18:00 – only 13.6% want to stick with the traditional 9-5
* A further 51.7% would be happy with 25 days holiday, while 24.1% would want to stretch to 30 days
* What’s more, 39% would prefer to work for a business with less than 250 employees, compared to 6.8% who wanted to work for a start-up and 27.1% for a large corporate company
* And over half (54.2%) want to work somewhere that has a smart/casual dress code

When asked to share the top three workplace perks or benefits they’d like to receive, 72.4% said paid sick leave, 50% said health insurance and 44.8% said the ability to work from home. In addition, 24.1% wanted a company car and another 24.1% wanted income protection.

When asked what pension contribution they’d like their employer to pay, 37.9% said 5% and 32.8% said 5%.

Manchester was voted the location that engineering professionals would most like to work in, with 16.9% stating that their ideal job would be based in this city. This was followed by London (15.3%) and Liverpool (15.3%).

Lee Biggins, founder and CEO of CV-Library, comments: “Everyone wants to get something different out of the workplace – whether it’s a good pay packet, or the ability to work more flexible hours. If you’re searching for a job right now, it’s always best to have a clear idea of what you want from your role, so you’re able to find a position that’s right for you.

“But, while choosing a company that fits the bill and facilitates your needs is extremely important; don’t rule out any opportunities just because they don’t tick every single box. You wouldn’t want to miss out on a potentially great opportunity this January!”
